[CREATURE] Metre worm
« on: June 12, 2011, 01:30:46 am »

Nothing major, just a fun little domestic creature for the dwarves to embark with.  The standard dogs and cats seem a little too surface-y for my tastes, so I'm making a few that seem more suited to never seeing the light of day.

As of version 31.25, this creature works correctly.  Given that worms are supposed to be hermaphroditic, I allowed males to lay eggs as well.  If anyone asks, the dwarves selected a gender for them.  They also lack pretty much any and all offensive capabilities (the only way they'll kill anything is if they try to push against something that dodges off the side of a chasm).

As ever and always, advice for improvement is appreciated.

Can you mod it to sleep inside of the dwarves?

I like this.
Nice and Dwarfy.
Too bad it doesn't hunt Vermin.
Or do anything useful.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Usefulness is what materials they give to the dorfs who harvest them. And if extra tough, they give combat training to one's militia.

Tomi has a good point about them.  Because of their general lack of body parts, especially limbs, Arena testing has shown them to be tougher little buggers to kill than their size would otherwise indicate.  Assign a few as pets to military/hunter dwarves and they'll literally act as meat shields, soaking up a bite here and a gore there.

As for Deon's suggestion, I find them nesting in a dwarven colon a fun idea, but doubtfully possible given the current coding.  Would make for a hell of a surprise if a goblin slices open Urist McWoodsdwarf, only to find the contents of the guts erupting out and attacking.  I could give them a mild syndrome wherein they give the contacting creature millmetre worms, which burrow into the gut and cause mild nausea and perhaps some impared guts (should be fun to see what that does to a dwarf; it's not like it'll give them the runs or make them backed up).

If I combine the comments of Monk and katana, I come up with the concept of casting them.  The average metre worm would be unchanged, but I could put in a 1/1000 chance of them being a massive killmetre worm.  They could be roughly rhino- or elephant-sized, have a bite, and could be trained for war and mounting (cross this with Rhenaya's drow and watch as a squad of Drow come calling on killmetre wormback; a nice mental visual).
