Blockland - The game where you build stuff!
« on: June 11, 2011, 11:10:27 pm »

First of off you need to have a link to the site http://www.blockland.us/
Blockland is like, well, legos online but its not. There are many good players but many bad players. The game cost $20 but you can play a demo that you have 150 blocks. This is the forums http://forum.blockland.us/
This is what the site says the game is like "Blockland is an online multiplayer game where you build things with bricks.
It's like playing with legos on the internet. " So far the V is in 19. Eric "Badspot" Hartman is the maker of the name. He does have a life so he won't update like every month unless and update has many bugs.
And now what most people would like pics.

Welp that's all I could think of. Bye.

Can you actually deconstruct blox and destroy towns like in the last picture? Or is that staged.

I played TBM for several years when I was younger (which morphed into "The Orange Block" a bit later on). They were sort of a splinter group away from the original Blockland, which from my limited understanding of the situation, were questionably legal splinters. Or at least ones which pissed off the original developer.
They have a combat system which made for some pretty fun deathmatches, complete with vehicles and server-crashing nukes, and a much more in depth editing system, allowing for things like buttons to move/rotate/scale as desired, triggered auto-turrets which would shoot a weapon at anyone who got near it, teleporters, killblocks, and some others I'm probably forgetting. I even experimented with computers using the teleporters, buttons, ect. I once made a cart factory which, with the press of a single button, started an automated assembly line. Last I checked, it was free as well; I suggest giving it a look: http://www.theorangeblock.org/

As for the original; never played it myself. I am curious though as to how slow/laggy the game runs in its current state. TBM I always remember as getting slow around the 2-3k brick count; although part of that may simply have been due to my running it on a crap computer. But it was bad enough that some servers would boot you if you built without scaling the bricks (to use 1 per wall, instead of a wall made of 50 bricks stacked on one another).

That TOB thing seems pretty awesome. Is that sort of a free clone of Blockland? (Hard to tell if it actually splintered off of the Blockland code or what is going on there from the website xD)

In my experience the majority of this game's community is retarded. But it really is a fun game, can't go wrong with a big multiplayer Lego game.

Did the horrible performance and game dying if you tried to, you know, do anything involving medium to large amounts of blocks, and so forth, ever get fixed? I played Blockland back when it was free, and it was a bit hilarious when the author decided to make it cost money and the game was pretty much breaking any time you tried to do anything fun. (That said, making a script to auto-build a sky tower was a fun time)

Plus I think we were all expecting him to get sued into the ground once he started charging for it, but apparently that never happened.

What did he do for you to expect that? Reverse-engineer Roblox? (speaking of that, I was surpirised when I saw a Roblox card in the middle of all the Runescape, WoW, LOTRO, and DDO card things in electronics at Wal-mart)

They probably expected Lego to sue him.

The version you have to pay for uses a modified version of the torque engine (compared to the unmodified version(s) that all other "versions" (alphas, clones, mods) use).

It does something fancy with octrees, so has no problem rendering literally hundreds of thousands of bricks and still getting a decent framerate. The catch is that bricks can't be rotated, scaled, or moved after creation, and are all aligned to a grid.

One of the more recent updates added (client-side) physics for destroyed bricks, they can interact with each other, but exert no force on other physics objects.

Blockland vs. Roblox is an ancient conflict, both sides claiming to be the better game.
