Do we have a pretendor?

I am guessing it is a surprise.

Yeah, not a big surprise, though. I'll probably get through to the turn when she wakes up today.

Hmm, I can still see them. They're in spoilers, so you're going to have to click the spoilers open to see the pictures. I did this partially for aesthetics (some pictures are just large and get in the way if they can't be tucked into a spoiler) and partially because it may (or may not... I'm not really sure) help people with slower internet connections.  Argh now I can't see them. Gonna go hunt for an image host...

Spoiler: Image test (click to show/hide)
Edit: Ok, images should be back to stay.

We still need a name for the prophet and any other units that you guys want!

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

While the spy networks began to gather information about the surrounding lands, Urist McProphet readied his troops for their first foray into the uncivilized realms. The news that the spies returned with was less than optimal, however.
Spoiler: So many indies... (click to show/hide)
With that news, and the knowledge that expansion meant more resources to bolster the new Ulmish armies, it was decided that one province would be chosen to gauge the strength of Ulmish black steel. Cerne, a forest province to the northwest was reported to have fewer defenders and a complete lack of archers and thus was the best choice for Urist's expedition.
Spoiler: Moving out to Cerne (click to show/hide)

The forges were also being lit and the Master Smiths were training new recruits.
Spoiler: Forges and Smiths (click to show/hide)

Even the general populace joined in the efforts. With the knowledge that the Smiths would soon be needing magic gems to forge equipment for the armies, search parties went out across the fields.
Spoiler: Giant ice crystals (click to show/hide)
Tradesmen set up a trade guild to facilitate the movement of goods, increasing revenue across the province.
Spoiler: Merchants (click to show/hide)

All seemed to be going as planned, the only uncertainty was how much opposition the defenders of Cerne would provide. Unfortunately, the answer to this was "almost too much."

Spoiler: Battle results (click to show/hide)
It had been a grueling battle for both sides.
Spoiler: Battle! (click to show/hide)

The battle for Cerne had been won. It was, as the spy networks has promised, a highly populated province that would provide ample tax revenue and resources for the equipment of Ulm's troops.
Spoiler: Cerne (click to show/hide)
Urist was celebrated for his victory and inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Spoiler: Urist the valorous (click to show/hide)

On the eve of the conquest of Cerne, a spy brought back interesting news. A nation had been sighted.
Spoiler: Ermor! (click to show/hide)

-----------------------------------------------
I set up some defense in Cerne because I have an excess of money (can't spend it all with limited resources) and because... ERMOR! I don't want to lose right away! I think I might end up using province defense, simply because it looks like I've given myself a harder time than I thought. Also, future updates will cover more time because that was a lot of effort for what was basically one turn.

Word from Ulmish loyalists made its way back to Ulm with troubling news. It seems that this newly discovered nation, Ermor, was being commanded by a giant cyclops. The cyclops was said to have a divine aura and peasants in Cerne had begun to believe that it may be the next divine being meant to take command of the world. The Ulmish Priest Smiths thus decided to send an emissary to Cerne to construct a temple and teach the residents of the power of the Iron Faith.
The resident of Cerne responded to this attention is the best of ways, throwing a celebration and donating a trove of magic gems.
Shortly after the celebrations in Cerne, a mage by the name of Obscuro arrived in Ulm. He would have been immediately turned away, but it seemed that Ermor was already hiring mercenaries to bolster their numbers.
Spoiler: Mercs (click to show/hide)

In honor of his work with the people of Cerne, Donner was given the honorary name Kiron. By mid-autumn, much had happened.
Spoiler: Mid-Autumn (click to show/hide)
Urist's forces were nearly back to full strength, Obscuro had been hired (and was being kept on a short leash), and the Iron Faith was beginning to spread. The next target province, Rafabolia, was nearly within reach.

In order to keep Ermor in check, Estrith the spy was sent to instill unrest. Unfortunately he immediately discovered that the legions of Ermor were not all among the living. The undead ghouls did not require rest and eventually tracked him down. He managed to escape, but lost an eye in the process.
Spoiler: Estrith (click to show/hide)

By midwinter the strength of Urist's battalion had expanded past where it had begun. The mercenary Hector's horsemen were hired to reinforce the Ulmish men. While not as well equipped as Ulmish cavalry, they were experienced and did not require Ulmish resources to field. The Smiths had been searching for ways to use their knowledge of Earth and Fire to aid the armies on the battlefield and research into evocation was advancing. Rafabolia would fly the Ulmish flag by the end of winter.
Spoiler: Attack! (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Battle for Rafabolia (click to show/hide)

The battle for Rafabolia was won!
Spoiler: Rafabolia! (click to show/hide)

In the wave of celebration that followed victory, a figure was observed entering Ulm from the forests of Rafabolia. It was a woman, three times taller than most. She walked with the grace of the gently flowing water she crossed on Ulm's borders, and vegetation seemed to burst in to bloom as she passed. It would seem that she was the true reason for the vibrance of the lands around Ulm. Even though it was the dead of winter, crops across the province grew a second harvest and a fertility festival was held with the surplus food.
And that's the end of the first year. Not much progress compared to what I'm used to (usually about a province/month instead of one per SIX months like I did here) but harder independents + lower resources = really hard to make progress. Fortunately the AI's in a similar boat and only one of the nations has more provinces than I do (and they only have one more at that). I'll have evocation 3 soon so my Priest Smiths can start throwing iron shards and magma bolts and then I'll go hard into construction and get some thugs set up. I think I'm going to be able to set up a second fort north east of Rafabolia soon (take it within 2 turns, fort 4 or 5 turns after that, depending on how long it takes) so that should help with my army situation. Let me know what you guys think and if you want me to do anything in particular.

Aye, our Flailmen, Guardians, and Crossbowmen are our best troops, not counting cavilry of course but I personily prefer infantry.  Also, you need, I repeat NEED, to get someone with atleast 3(or 4 I forget which at the moment) fire magic, for the Forges of Ulm spell, it's basicly this spell, but it opens up at a lower level.

Yeah I was going for pikes because I knew I was going to be up against cavalry and the pikemen can do some pretty ridiculous parrying to prevent a lot of the damage the cavalry can do. Once I can make more than 3 troops a turn I'll diversify more and especially get some crossbowmen and guardians. I can't seem to find any record of a Forges of Ulm spell, in or out of the game. I've looked through all of the paths in the magic menu twice and done some searching around online and looked through the manual and I can't find anything. The Forge of the Ancients is on my list of goals though.

Really? It might just be one of my mods then, sorry, I've been useing them so long I can't remember what was added in and what wasn't. Let me check to see which mod added it in.

Edit: Yup a mod, sorry. It was added by Conceptual Balance Complete 1.84, the spell is basicly Forge of the Ancients only you get it immediately. It needs a mage that is level 5 earth magic, 3 fire, and takes 80 earth gems.

Ah ok. That's probably to offset hammers being unique I guess. I should probably try out the newer versions of CBM at some point.

I'm gonna take a bit of a break from updates. Maybe one more tonight, but I'm probably just going to play and accumulate screenshots so I can do updates in less time/not in front of the game.
