Minor suggestion, name entry?
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:13:48 pm »

This is just coming from someone who grew rather attached to their founder and want's to recreate her after something, i'm not sure what caused my save to corrupt. Won't load and looking into the file with notepad just shows garbage that's not there in my girlfriends save. But anyway...

Would it be too much against anything the game stands for to be able to enter your first and last name? In this case I just wanna give my founder another chance. She was doing so well up till then and having my save just plop dead like that feels wrong.

I like the current naming system.
What would be better would be an option to go to the courthouse or something and legally change it later.
The game needs more NPCs in general that just stand around and have special actions, like the landlord.

I suppose that's a sensible option for people who want to specify their founder's real name.

Also, you do get to declare your codename. The real name is never used except by the law.

Every time I think I want this suggestion, playing the game reminds me how the true name thing is part of the atmosphere and immersion. I'm not opposed to it. I'd just never use it.

I'm not exactly against declaring one's own name, but I think it might dilute the realism if people started naming their characters like they name their Dungeon Crawl Vampire Wizards. The current name system conveys the feeling of realism right from the start, setting what is in my opinion, the proper tone. Also, having the player choose two different names for the same character seems a bit silly.

On the other hand, perhaps there could be an "anonymous start" option where the character does not have a real name, only the code name. The court would refer to him/her as "unidentified person known by the name <codename>" or whatever.

I like it as it is, but the ability to have one's real name legally changed at the courthouse would be a reasonable addition. You just never see games where your character's parents give your character their name instead of the player themselves, so it's an interesting feature.

Ooh, getting a name changed would be a nice touch of flavor, and could be outfitted with a few more:

- having a rap sheet would have a chance of the clerk noticing it and sounding the alarm, possibly depending on the character's poker face skills
- choosing a first name that's not on the name list would receive some witty comment from the clerk as (s)he stamps the papers

"Well, that's certainly... an exotic choice."

Addendum: Except if Free Speech is Elite Liberal, where everyone's choices are respected, or Arch-Conservative, where it is a crime to try and change your name to somthing not on "the approved list".

Arch-Conservative FS laws + Liberal enough gender/gay equality laws will expand your choices to include the opposite gender's name list as well.

Related: have this be a high possibility, but if you can pull it off, your charges are 'cleared.'

I wouldn't say cleared, as they'd check through the records if you got arrested. It could plausably reset your heat, though.

Being a professional database expert, I'd fire the idiot who made a government database that uses a person's name as a key value.

Kay12 cannot possibly mean the fact that there are several James Bond in the world, and that it's probably the same with other names, can he?

A primary key value should always be unique. Since most names aren't, database keys for people are typically something like... well, like your student number, social security code etc.

In any case, for a name change to have any chance of accidental rap sheet clearing, the database would have to use the person's name as the primary key.
