I, a lowly lurker, found myself having so much fun writing haikus that I had to sign up for an account and throw my attempt in the ring.

Here we are,
Masters of our world.
On a speck;
Insignificant.

More about the vastness of space than space travel, but I tried.  Thanks for this contest, love the idea.

Depths of silence
Lost in ink, blackness
Forever dark

Blazing wonder
Light and thunder
Battle rages all around
Fleet is failing
Hull breach, we die

Since I'm a terrible haiku writer, I thought I add a poem too. Writing the Haiku gave me inspiration.

It took guts to do what you did.
To get on that shuttle and float away
To feel the speed underneath your feet
To see the world flash before you eyes
To know that this was the journey
To your own world’s ending

It took guts to get off that tug
To walk the last mile
To mount that ramp of despair
To see the kind stranger
To ignore the words of danger
To keep trotting on
To your own world’s ending

It took guts to take the helm
To fight the loneliness
To cast away the darkness
To see that speeding wall of metal
To hear the rolling thunder
To your own world’s ending

It takes guts for all the remaining ones
To accept you are gone
To see that stone in the ground
To wonder why you left
To carry on without your smile
To remember your world’s ending
