Funny story - I knew this kid once, his mother was my mother's friend, and his parents were certain he had Asperger's because he acted like a jerk all the time. They kept bringing him to a psychologist to get him checked out, and one day the psychologist took the mother aside and said: "Look, he doesn't have Asperger's syndrome. That is literally just what his personality is like. There is no way to cure it."

Wheras if he had Asperger's... "Look, he has Asperger's syndrome. That is literally just what his personality is like. There is no way to cure it."

But a good psychologist would offer behavior therapy to someone with Aspergers, where as a bad psychologist would try to force it on both cases. I guess that guy in Grakelin's story got lucky he didn't have a greedy psychologist..

Yes, yes it would. I mean you can still expect a low success rate, but it would be better then your current choice.

Hmm... I don't think the definition of Asperger's has anything to do with whether behavioral therapy will help or not, does it?  It's perfectly possible that someone who struggles socially but who doesn't meet the Asperger's definition would benefit from behavioural therapy while someone else who does fit the Asperger's definition wouldn't.

Hmm... I don't think the definition of Asperger's has anything to do with whether behavioral therapy will help or not, does it?

Not necessarily, as noted in the above posts. But as far as I know drugs have little to no effect on Aspergers or autisim, leaving therapy as the only effective option if the individual is incapable of functioning in society.

So I don't know much about Asperger's aside from what I've read here on this thread. I've just got one question: How does this inability to translate non-verbal emotion work out in environments like, say, the internet, this forum, etc? Just looking for a little clarification on how "text" falls into this, I guess.

Sorry if the wording or question is offensive in some way. The reason I ask is that I have a form of Schizophrenia, which as it turns out makes me a somewhat socially awkward person. I've found this awkwardness DOES translate into text, and perhaps even amplifies it in some circumstances. Not cool.

Cause it is the in thing to do right now to say you have it.

I mean, even despite the valid answers the others gave. (which when you think about it are not that good, because you could just come up with other reasons why someone would or would not respond. I dunno if it would skew it that much.)

For me, at least, I can have a lot of trouble with misinterpreting intent.  I spent a long time lurking so that I could figure out the basic social rules before posting... it wasn't one of those things where I could jump in and go "okay, got this one covered."  That, and there's still quite a few metaphors that throw me for a loop. 

I have to say, though, I suspect I have a lot less trouble with this than the average person with AS does, because I basically do all of my interpretation of meaning, nuance, etc., through extensive textual analysis--even in live situations!  So in situations like this, I have an advantage.  I also seem to have ended up with an advantage over most "normal" people in interpreting texts as a result, so... it's not all bad, I suppose.

This is why I generally don't tell anyone I have it unless necessary.
