Why...

Why is there a small part of me that's actually afraid to look behind me right now? Get out of my head.

Well, if you insist, but if I leave, I wonder what might take my place...

Like most people who do any studying into psychological disorders, I was paranoidly afraid that I might have undiagnosed Aspergers for a time around two years ago, along with every other mental illness in the world. After I calmed down it was more clear that I did not fit the symptoms, and my relative lack of social skill and interaction was more a choice on my part to be a loner than any sort of mental problem.

One of my classmates did wildly accuse me of having Aspergers once, though. Just another silly highschooler convinced she knew everything about everything, now that I think about it in retrospect.

Fixed, I suppose.
Not for me.

Put me down as:
Have|Haven't been diagnosed.  Do|Do not think I am.  I have|have not thought it more convenient to be so.  There definitely is|is not something not quite right with me.  I am|am not perfectly normally functioning.  I can|cannot pass in normal society.  I am introverted|extroverted.  I tend to be verbose|succinct in my everyday communications.

But only if you make sure each and every possibility is fully enumerated in your pole, otherwise I will shut up about it|pedantically point out the continuing incompleteness of the vote options.

I'm really supposed to know this kind of stuff, having studied psychology and all, but I can't remember anything but the most superficial details. If you haven't read the novel A Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, I suggest you do try, as it gives quite a vivid portrayal of what it is like to have symptoms of the disorder.

Oh, yes. Eventually we might see autism and Asperger's rolled together into autism spectrum disorder, because psychiatrists are moving away from a binary system of diagnosis (ie. you either have a disorder or you don't) to appreciating a range in severity of symptoms presented. I'm looking forward to that because I'm seeing mention of Asperger's crop up quite often when discussing someone with poor social skills, and the increasing medicalisation of personal attributes does concern some people.

Did I make a mistake? I'm not sure if the author said Christopher had autism or Asperger's, but he does function very well for an autistic person. Running away from home is quite a hellish undertaking.

I believe there was a discussion that this book does NOT adequatey describe how it is to have those disorders, but everybody believes it does.

I think that argument is made because Christopher is supposed to be autistic but he's functioning far too well to be one. I suspect the author took some poetic license in ameliorating Christopher's more disabling characteristics. Still a really good novel though! Point taken. :)

I wouldn't say I have Asperger's (it's a word, spellchecker (so's spellchecker), shut up), nor any type of autism. Haven't been diagnosed with either, but I've never seen a head doctor in my life. I'd say I'm an introvert with a lack of empathy, though. That means I'm allowed to say I am and be a total dick, right?  :P
