Asperger's: A Poll.
« on: June 10, 2011, 01:24:50 am »

I'd never heard of this syndrome until after joining B12, and it seems to be growing more and more commonly admitted. So here's a private poll*, should the subject be sensitive to anyone, and a question...

What is Asperger's?

* And Spaceballs reference, which is not intended to be offensive in any way.

aspergers is a syndrome where the affected cant read your facial expressions to tell your emotions.
say you are angry and have a big scowl on your face because the person just kicked you. they wouldnt be able to tell you were angry from your face. I am a scout and there was a guy who had this, everyone hated him because he was loud and annoying and "stupid". he eventually got diagnosed with it and left the scout group. He was actually in a program for gifted students at the time i  think.

I had been wondering for some time if something like this would ever pop up.

So I was diagnosed with this when I was six, and in all honestly, I think somebody got something wrong somewhere. I'm a some what sociable guy, although maybe a little insane sometimes, but who isn't? I am into programming, but then again the inception phase of the project is my speciality, as I enjoy getting client details, responses, and planning with them a lot more than placing semicolons. I moved out of my parents house at the age of 18, and have a girlfreind. All in all I have a very social life, with a wide circle of friends, and do not have problems talking to others, strangers included.

Now misdiagnosis is always a possibility here. The man who did the diagnosis was Tony Attwood, a guy who has written books on the subject and is thought to know he's stuff, so it isn't likely to be another case of a lazy doctor who will sign anything to get a parent off he's back. But I still find it very hard to think that this applies to me. I just do not see myself fitting the description at all.

My theory is that our freind Dr. Aspergers, the man who first identified what we now call Aspergers syndrome, just liked to put people into boxes. People who feel very good about themselves are narcissist, and others are depressed. People who are on impulse are attention defeatist, and others are repressed. Everybody fit into these neat little categories, bar people who were very smart, but hardly social, so our friend Dr. Aspergers made a box for them!

Although like I said, this is just my own little theory, and I advice nobody to take this to be any sort of informed opinion. But as far as I have come to understand, with my years supposedly 'suffering' from it, it is as relevant to your personality as being left handed, and equally as much a disability.

And anybody out there with Aspergers that feels offended by this, and feels they have suffered because of it, I do apologise, think of me as being misdiagnosed and ill informed, I know I sure do.

Well the thing is Max White is that a lot of people never fall very strongly inside their category.

When I was diagnosed with Aspburgers for example... I essentially didn't. The analyser basically said that if they had to name it they called it "Aspburgers-esk" because I lacked some of the characteristics of someone with it (I had empathy for example)

however because "aspburgers-esk" isn't a diagnosis that institutions of learning could use. She wrote it as aspburgers.

No, that is "Assburgers"

At times I've wondered if I'm Aspergic.  Certainly somewhere on the Autism spectrum, and even had an old boss mention (at a closing interview when leaving that particular job) that he thought I showed some signs he recognised from a diagnosed aspergic relative of his.

The thing is, I just don't have the... not "positive", but shall we say... "desirably recompensing" features of AS (or higher-functioning autism) to complement the bits of my personality that are distinctly untrue to the population norm.

Empathy-wise, I know I'm pretty bad, but I don't know if this is the cause or the result of my perhaps far more trivially-caused non-social nature (forums, etc, are places where I choose to participate, but I don't choose to mix with people arbitrarily).  I've got terrible facial-recognition, at least the first several dozen times or so that I meet someone (but occasionally I even get myself wondering things like "does my dad have a moustache?" and worrying that I don't know the answer for sure), although I'm probably capable of determining a decent degree of emotion in a face(though it's hard to tell if I'm anywhere near the realisation anyone else would have, by my own analysis alone).

Totally departed from AS-typicality, I know my timekeeping and scheduling skills (and needs) are far from the legendary levels the more severe Aspergic/typical Autistic exhibit, and my level of personal and artefact disorder is somewhat atypical.  I don't have the associated sleep problems (aside from the difficulty getting to sleep, but that's followed by difficulty waking, usually[1]).  I don't have particularly (that I can tell) insufficient motor-skills, and seem to do alright at things I do a lot (e.g. typing), but don't know if that's a habituation response.  I don't believe I've got higher stress levels (much the opposite; which is to say that there's things in my life to be stressed about but I'm frequently aware that I'm not taking many of them as seriously as I should be). While I pride-myself in my perception of spacial relationships (I've grown up with a lot of maps in my life, for a start) I don't think I have unusual levels of that or hyper-sensitivity to such stimuli.

So, I sometimes wonder if I'm AS, on the other hand sometimes I've wondered if ADHD would have been diagnosed for me if I had been born and been growing up two or three decades later than I had been.  And, I get more and more convinced that there's no more than a superficial resemblance between my own condition (if I can even be rightly said to have one, and probably not) and any of the so-called disorders.

On the whole, though, I look at it like this...  With everyone 'normal', mankind would never advance.  In the days of cavemen, the thrill-seekers may get themselves killed off more than the cautious, but some might well discover the new trick of stampeding herds of mammoth over the edges of cliffs and help find a way for the tribe to feed for generations to come, while the thoughtful and introverted wouldn't directly earn the tribe meat and could be fatally oblivious to the approach of something sabre-toothed, but might (obviously before any chance of that fateful day) realise that a tree branch secured just so to another with some cord or fibre would be basis of a trap/animal warning system which could help the whole tribe.

Given everything, I don't think any of us are typical, and I don't really see the need to apply such as the ADHD label to every other kid under 12, although I don't doubt that there are some that need more understanding (and perhaps a little chemical help, with all due caveats...), much as there are kids who are faster/stronger or not so fast/strong, and ones who are distinctly physically/physiologically disabled (and, yet, they may be future Stephen Hawkings).  Maybe the "less intelligent ones" (many of whom, from decades ago, might well have been diagnosed these days as aspergic/dylexic/whatever) have something to provide to the Human Village that we (and they) can't yet discern?

And until and unless I'm in a situation where I'm essentially forced into it, I'm not in any danger of going to a friendly shrink and asking him/her to classify me.  Apart from anything else, I suspect I might be disappointed by being told "oh, you're essentially normal, just a bit more disorganised and somewhat face-blind", which is quite probably what I am.  Plus overly verbose.

[1] As an exception, I'm sitting procrastinating my morning away at the moment (it's still not yet 8:30, and the trip to work won't happen until 9:00, but there are loads of other things needing doing that might be better use of my time) having been up since around 6:00.  And, as another probable datum-point, I'm listening to a pre-recorded radio-programme running at double-speed so I can listen to it in half the time.

I'm not lacking empathy, to my understanding. Although in high school I kept to myself a fair bit, I was was feeling very depressed at that age, and as soon as I got out of that environment into something new, I really started to enjoy social situations a lot more, and found that extrovert was my true nature. While my hand eye coordination leaves something to be desired, I am blind in one eye, so that is to be expected, surly. I understand that some of the symptoms are apparent (Honestly, I can not stand the feel of a paddlepop stick) they are all very minor. Perhaps there are less overt symptoms, but I can not find them, and neither can the people around me. I often don't tell my friends, when at all possible, and they never know, so it isn't notable.

Although I am interested, Neonivek, if you are willing to share, and I think we would all understand if you were not, what symptoms do you think were apparent in yourself? And how much so?

Ohh goodness I don't like to play the "How aspburgers are you?" game.

Is there anyway I can not list it without losing any clout I may have?

Well, the only winning move is not to play, you know that as well as I do. I only ask out of my own interest, not because it will do you any good.

Goodness, I intentionally ignore the list because I hate lableing myself or referencing a list when analysing myself. Though I have gone through it once, though I don't remember it too well other then I am rather typical other then a few missing categories and things I have had learn to remove.

As I forgot to say, above, I might as well use this hook to mention that I can't relate to any of the three options given.

Well, my mum always says I might be aspergers or autistic in some way, but I honestly doubt that because I empathise fine, I'm only slightly socially awkward and I get over that fast if I have something in common. I don't find it hard to relate to other people at all, really. Personally I suspect she's being a spiteful old witch as usual and it's another little strategy to try and undermine me because I disagree with her in so many ways.

Sometimes I wonder if a lot of anime fans are autistic, since all they do is rabbit on about the same series constantly instead of trying to make interesting conversation.

Really, though, lots of people think they're autistic because they feel a bit socially awkward, but it goes so far beyond that. I have a few autistic friends and you can only really talk to most of them about one or two topics. If you get OFF those topics, they'll try and come back to them (part of the social training thing in trying to connect your experiences with someone else's in order to show empathy). Most of them aren't even really socially awkward.

There is one Asperger guy I knew from school but he was a moron. He basically thought: 'I have asperger so I can act like a dick to people!'
He left school the next year though, he now goes to a 'special' school...
