I dunno.  I'm not sure I agree that anything sexy is automatically fan service.  I've always felt its fan service when its out of place.  Like wonder woman fighting crime wouldn't be fan service, but wonder woman eating a banana might be.

I'm not sure if being continuous in sexualizing women is any improvement over occasionally doing it. That would make certain anime with provocative outfits "not fanservice".

(EDIT: Where i think the fan-service comes in, in the western action/superhero stuff is in lots of poses, jumps, kicks, etc that show off the female's legs and cleavage, rather than suggestive plot elements)

e.g. if an anime's basic concept was loli catgirls in panties fighting aliens in WWII and they're always in that outfit in every scene, that makes it no longer "fan service" so it's ok now?

That's a different sort of fanservice; one that appeals to our inner schizophrenic. :P

Also Sheera is your example of a fan-service woman? being attractive and wearing a skirt and long highheel shoes?
To be fair, that wouldn't be within pretty much any high school dress code.

loli catgirls in panties fighting aliens in WWII and they're always in that outfit in every scene ... fan-service
Huh? I think you misspelled boiling sea of hatred there.

One reason I mentioned She-Ra is that I watched He-man and She-ra as a kid, and it was quite clear to me back then (well before I saw any anime fan-service) they were doing their best at "sexing her up", and doing a continuous *nudge nudge wink wink* about what was up her "magic skirt".

She loved to jump, high, high in the air - and the animators loved to animate her butt from below, to within what must have been literally a millimeter of her panty line. It's pretty clear that if broadcast restrictions had allowed it, they'd have included panty shots during the fights in every episode (at least a glimpse).

EDIT: I stand corrected, it seems they actually DID slip some panty in later (specifically: for christmas), but just not the stuff I saw.

Sexy chicks with massive boobs in super-short skirts jumping around isn't fan-service?

Look couldn't you get the ones that are a MUCH better example of this? Like Emma Frost or Power Girl?

Quote
Yeah. For one, the former is merely a subset of the latter

Being sexy is a bit different then being Fanservice. Since any attractive person would usually fall into being sexy unless they have a child-like appearance.

It is how the character exudes the fact they are sexy that is different.

Dorothy from Marchen Awakens Romance for example is a great example of Fanservice for a character who isn't all that sexy. Her Boobs jiggle at random times, her fights tend to be rather unfortunately sexual, and a tendency to lose her clothing.

Early Wonderwoman though, yeah was pretty fanservicey what with the sexual imagry she always seems to bump into (and getting spanked). MIND YOU FAR less fanservice then just about any anime.

So yeah as fanservicey as you say those are. Once again Anime looks at it and goes "Yeah, we do better then that for toddlers".

Unless you want to find a character for a SHOW FOR KIDS that can compete with Ms.Boing a woman whos super power is that she has the most impressive pair of boobs in the world (Litterally)

High heels are instant fanservice in almost every situation. Those things are uncomfortable as hell and aren't day to day footwear, especially if any sort of physical activity (running, fighting) is going on.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Talking in terms of "unnecessary sexualisation" rather than fanservice would probably make more sense.

AND ONTO GREENER PASTURES

Can anyone recommend me an anime? :) I've seen Gurren Lagan (it was okay), Fullmetal Alchemist Series 1 (very good), Code Geass (amazing), and Infinite Stratos (rubbish, but still funny, a bit like The Room.)

You'de probably get better advice from the anime thread, but I recommend Death Note. Fullmetal Alchemixt: Brotherhood is also very good, if you liked the first anime.

I think I'd like Death Note, but alot of people have basically drawn thousands of parallels to Code Geass, so much so that it seems I might be reading the same storyline again.

Cowboy Beebop looks good; I'll have to adjust to the animation style but it does look grand.

Never heard of Steins Gate, I'll check that out! :D

I would watch FA:B, but only the first few ep's are on the choob.

Thank you both! :)

We do have an actual anime thread[/quote], you know. Reelya just decided to necro this for whatever reason.  :P

Though to actually help you: What sort of series are you looking for, in terms of length and content? What did you specifically like about CG, FMA, and TTGL?
