Yeah, but does Faye in a bikini really count directly as fanservice?  I don't remember it feeling particularly directed at me or particularly out of place in the show.  Most fan service is stuff that is out of place in the show and aimed at giving kids boners.

Let's, ah. Let's just say counting by relative generation of derivative works of the characters, I'd probably say Faye counts as fanservice. The bikini bit(s. Don't recall if there were multiple.) is just a little extra on top. Fanservice isn't inimical to plot or necessarily unfitting with the scenario! It can be well utilized, there's nothing wrong with a sexy, vivacious character, and it's entirely possible one (or more) fits in the general atmosphere of the show perfectly. But fanservice is still fanservice, and when more skin is showing than not on a notably attractive character, I'd say it probably counts

I actually can't recall any manga or anime off the top of my head that's not aimed at younger audiences that doesn't indulge in fanservice at least a little, but that has a lot more to do with my tastes in the medium (I avoid serious stuff like the plague and pretty much specifically seek out light-hearted and/or fanservice-y stuff, heh.) than anything else. I know I've read/seen multiple of them, I just can't recall any, heh.

I don't think Fate/Zero has any.  Can't say it's "light-hearted" though.

The only bit of Berserk (that I can recall offhand) that could possibly count in my book as fanservice would be that scene in the cave after one of the Golden Age battles where Guts and Casca were both hurt and hiding from enemy soldiers, and that was firmly in the territory of "fits the context". There was certainly plenty of fandisservice, though. Most certainly not lighthearted, either. IMO something is only fanservice if it's there solely for the purpose of titillating the audience.

Isn't, uh. Isn't the fanservice thing kinda' an ubiquitous thing across cultural borders and media formats? It's in more than it's not, really, from what I've seen. Western, eastern, tiny pre-agrarian villages in the congo, whatever. I don't really find most of what I've seen in the anime realm to be more egregious than, well, TV in general. Or movies. Or western cartoons. Or books old and new, or ancient myths, or... well, the list goes on

Maybe folks are more inured to the fanservice in the media format they're more familiar with?

I read an article on real-TV fan-service, and they mentioned this girl in one of the CSI's, maybe Miami, who has a nice butt, and every "establishing shot" of a scene she's in has her in tight jeans and the camera slowly pans up her legs to her butt.

American sit-coms used to have a common trope that a girl would enter the scene in a short skirt, they'd give you a full view of her legs for a moment, and then only show above the waist until the end of the scene, then a quick flash of leg again. When I noticed that (back in my crappy tv watching days before I got the 'net), I suddenly noticed about a dozen shows doing the exact same trick xD I guess it's a tease to keep male viewers watching.

I did mention this a while back, saying it didn't bug me as much as because it fit her character- to say, Faye Valentine is a skank. And not in a strictly playful fanservicey way, but in a that's-a-bad-character-flaw way. I'm sure I would be giving even Bebop more than it deserves if I said they didn't plan on putting in some fanservice for its own sake with this, but at least it does amount to something in terms of plot and character development.

I'll give you that. To be perfectly honest, it might be due more to the fact that I watch a much higher volume of anime than live-action western drama. Partially because I don't own a television, and partly because I've found that the latter has an even lower ratio of good:crap than the former.

Yeah, fanservice is definitely becoming more acceptable (and therefore common, I don't think there was much else holding them back) in western media. At least Game of Thrones is a very R-rated show, for what it's worth. In fact a lot of the nudity is, and likely intended to be, kind of uncomfortable (although some of it is indeed just fanservice). It seems like a lot of anime puts fanservice in without accounting for how it affects the overall formula.

Anyway, cosplaying as a stripper? A stripper dresses up all skimpy and takes their clothes off. That woman is dressing up all skimpy and taking her clothes off. That basically all amounts to dressing up in a certain way... can you dress up AS a stripper without being a stripper? I mean I guess you could dress up like someone who's likely to strip but not actually strip, but that's not what she's doing and my brain ouch

Anyway I did neglect to mention some other animes which past the "can stand it" test:

Lupin III: This is another show which has a mundane aesthetic, no "power levels", fisticuffs happen, etc. It has some incredibly stupid blasphemy against science, but like Gurren Lagann it kind of gets a pass for being self-aware and completely over the top. Also, I don't think a single person has blue hair to my recollection, which is a plus. There's fanservice, but it's often played for laughs. Man, I just wish I could find that one adult swim bumper...

Speed Racer: A classic! I actually watched this when I was a kid, even though it was old even then. This includes a lot of things that other animes I liked have (no super powers, fisticuffs, and, let's be honest, 70's hair). Probably of note here is that the production values, which are often by today's standards, don't really bug me. There's a lot of repetitive animation and some off-model moments. Even when it's really corny and unrealistic, something about the plot seems more believable (or at least, investing) than a lot of the anime I don't like. I like the slower pace and establishing shots too. That seems like a small factor, but it's really noticeable if you watch some of the later half-hour episodes (they're traditionally two-parters totaling to an hour for each episode) which feel rushed, incoherent and kind of rubbish.

So I guess the moral of the story is I hate super-powers, power levels, and wangst. Except when they aren't taken seriously. Put that way, you'd think that accounts for a very narrow margin of anime, and yet... it doesn't. Certainly not by share of popularity at least. Oh yeah, and I don't like fucking kawaii cat ears. Put that on the list.
