I'm aware that there's a recognized fetish for sort of anonymous train fondling, and see no reason to demonize a fetish so long as it's not forced on the unwilling.  I'm going to assume that the word was created via recognition of that fetish.  If there is a widespread problem of real abuse on trains, then that's a different issue.  They have specialized words for all kinds of bizarre fetishes, some of which aren't even realistic... so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one until given reason not to.

Indeed. And besides, there's a lot of english words that describe really weird fetishes too; You just need to go to Urban Dictionary.com and click the "random" button a few times and you'l probbly come across one of them on your first few clicks

Like Mechaphiles!

I'm going to do myself a favour and not look that up, but going from the name, and the number of giant robots in Japan and Japanese culture, I would say it is common all over.

Mechaphiles sounds like an anime where there are registered sex offenders who transform into robots. Or at least that's what I think.

If it were a real show, I would only watch it if they had transformer themed names. Like Fondlebee instead of Bumblebee.

Yes.  As far as I know, anyway, but yes, Japan is (in my humble opinion) not a safe place to be a woman for that reason and many others.
It's true, but to be honest you could say the same about most countries.  I certainly would say the same of the UK and the US.

Yes, definitely.  I should have made it clear that I 100% agree on that front.

However, I think there are certain issues specific to Japan, just as sexism has its own unique flavor in the US and UK.

AFAIK, train molesting in Japan's gotten to the point where they've implemented women-only train cars a while ago.

Well that certainly explains a few things.

Dunno if it's been put in place, but there was a fuss from many men about that who decided they wanted men only cars in case a women would want to get on the normal car and claim that she had been groped.

It's also why all cell-phones make a really loud camera-click when taking photos.  Japan passed a law that all digital cameras have to make a loud noise, because of the rash of guys taking up-skirt photos.

I think it could be caused by a strong deviant counter culture.

My phone stops making the noise when I put it on silent mode. Think I could trade it in Japan for one of their really high tec, fancy ones?
