My phone stops making the noise when I put it on silent mode. Think I could trade it in Japan for one of their really high tec, fancy ones?

Your apparent willingness to trade good tech for another man's ability to take upskirt photos says a lot.

I have no need to take upskirt pictures and I like high tec. Am I to be held responsible for the actions of another man, and what he does with phones I no longer own?

Your selling a device to someone with explicit knowledge that they are planning on using it for illicit reasons.

I think that makes you an accomplice.

Fuck. Well, at least I will always be the envy of every Japanese pervert.

That might not have sounded right.

Dunno if it's been put in place, but there was a fuss from many men about that who decided they wanted men only cars in case a women would want to get on the normal car and claim that she had been groped.
Yeah. Have you seen the movie "I Just Didn't Do It"?

It goes over this exact problem, where a guy is falsely accused for groping on a train. From what I gather, it's not like everyone thinks train groping is a-okay. The amount of pressure cracking down on train gropers is immense, and if a guy is accused, there's a ton of hurdles they'll have to go through to clear their name.

This article online even says there're even scammers that'll call up people and say that a family member's been seen groping a woman on the train, and the woman is willing to settle instead of taking it to court. Whether it's true or not, it's definitely plausible, considering the whole problem of train groping is because it's difficult to tell if someone was really groping, and it's even difficult to tell who was groping.

So yeah, split trains.

EDIT: Not exact problem. It's sort of implied that it was misplaced accusation, not a girl trying to get others in trouble.

I hadn't heard that it was that bad.  I had seen that there are fetish clubs where simulated train groping is one of the attractions, but that was all I knew about it.  It's sad to learn about this.

I think I'll do some research on feminist issues in japan sometime soon, because it's a subject I have very conflicted impressions of.

Japan isn't really as "enlightened" towards females as animes may indicate to the average person. Though I don't want to say more at risk at being considered intollerant or racist.

I can't figure out if this is a joke or if I misunderstood it.

The average person watches anime that portrays females in a way that could be thought of as 'enlightened'?
*Looks up death note*
No, I'm not crazy. The lead female role really is a insane bimbo who can't compete with the guys, who are all shown as super intelligent, and instead she gets by on her looks and impulsive destruction. And this was meant to be a very 'smart' anime. While there are many that do a much better job with portraying female role models, they aren't as seen in the wider public eye.

My impressions don't just come from anime, though.

I'm no expert and haven't been close to a bunch of Japanese people, but I've taken a japanese cultural history course, two years of language, and been exposed to plenty of Japanese media besides anime/manga.  One of my dad's best co-worker friends for many years left Japan because she couldn't stand the patriarchy, but that was at least 30 years ago (her mother lived near Hiroshima when the bomb was dropped).  She hardly even has an accent.  In contrast, my wife was friends for a while with a Japanese exchange student in her early twenties who couldn't wait to go back to Japan to escape the objectifying treatment she received here America.  There's plenty of objectification of women in Japanese media, but it's never seemed to me like it's any more sinister than anywhere else.  Just quirkier and subject to different boundaries.  My impression for years has been that Japan has a history of very rigid patriarchy, but their culture has changed drastically over the last 50 years or so, to the point that I wouldn't expect them to have anymore problems with sexism than most places.  Most claims of such I've heard come from people aged 40+, who were biased by their parents having told stories about the Japanese culture they learned when they were at war with them.

The Japenese Media has been shaped by successful marketing towards women.

That is why they often seem more "Enlightened" to the casual observer.

Something to read up about are "Herbivore Men".

It was all the rage in the news a while ago, where it basically said the young males of Japan today are becoming increasingly more passive in relationships, while becoming increasingly more interested in what is traditionally seen as "feminine". Naturally, the older generation's flipping out about this.

Japan is not very clear-cut at all when it comes to how they view women.

Well, there's the part where women are expected to speak at a vastly more polite level than men, though that may just be somewhat more obvious due to the fact that politeness is encoded grammatically, rather than more in terms of word choice and so on.  I know that the women here are taught to never swear in Japanese courses, and never to show anger (by which I mean we aren't allowed to say the equivalent of "drat" and are instead taught to say what amounts to "oh dear~!").  The standards for language usage seem very different.  You are going to have lower rank no matter what, in every social situation; heck, the Japanese creation myth has the world coming to ruin because the woman speaks before the man, so they have to fix it to put it back in the natural order.

In terms of career prospects and things, though... I really do think that women have more opportunities here.  I may be wrong, but the impression I received was that you basically don't have career options as a woman in Japan.

But, again, I may be totally wrong about that.

You can't exactly pinpoint Japan exactly because I'd consider them in a transitional period.

Though they have a LOT of hold overs on women.
