I will say however that Anime will intersect Fanservice EXTREMELY inappropriately.

And it tends to be very obnoxious. Obnoxious and tasteless. Random panty shots and unnaturally bouncing breasts that literally seem to be sentient entities desperately trying to escape from a girl's chest tasteless. Sometimes it gets to the point where I wonder if I'm being shown a parody of fan service and end up with the Poe's Law of animated tits.

Anyhow. I think a good deal of the difference here has to do with the basic conception of what constitutes "anime". On one side, we have the stuff that gets imported and aired on the tele at a reasonable hour of the day, which is where a lot of the hatedom probably got their exposure. So we have DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, CardCaptor Sakura, and so on. Y'know. The stuff that (values dissonance aside) was primarily written for children. Not to say it is automatically bad, but that is where a lot of the cited tropes tend to be drawn from. On the other side of the equation, we have GitS, Macross, Golgo 13, Berserk, Rose of Versailles, and so forth.

GitS, less so the films, has at least some out of place (for me) comedy elements. I'm thinking of the tachikoma. Fanservice is also rife: I remember in one episode Kusanagi has to wear underwear instead of her main clothing and people share glances and make comments while I honestly couldn't tell the difference between her underwear and her usual clothing. Oh and the crotch shots are fairly frequent. For me it detracted from the setting/mood.

Point being it's pretty universal in both realms, really. Maybe there's like, a 49/51 split or whatev'. But fanservice is fanservice and it's bloody everywhere.

Got to be honest I'm struggling to think of more than a few examples in western animation. I guess it could just be a lot less overt.

Game of Thrones: At least one scene featuring sex or tits for no reason in (almost) every episode.

And they toned it down from the books. Felt largely unnecessary in the books for me.

Two reasons for this:

1) Cartoons are stigmatized as "for kids."
2) Kids are thought to somehow become "corrupted" or "lose innocence" if they're exposed to anything sexual.

Both those bullshit concepts result in western animation not having much visual fanservice. You'll still see plenty of sexual jokes and the like, though.

Well, cartoons in western animation are specifically marketed as a kid's thing, western animation aimed at adult audiences that I've seen can have a metric f-ton of fan-service (Heavy Metal, Drawn Together).

What should be comparable is stuff aimed at the same demographic in both cultures. live-action American shows have plenty of fan service. sitcoms like "Married With Children" where almost all the women are walking fan-service moments are probably the equivalent of harem comedy anime, and JUST as predictable. Sitcoms also have cookie-cutter jokes, situations and characters.

But of course you wouldn't point at a shitty sitcom, than claim 30 Rock or Arrested Development suck by association, because they're both live action comedy shows from America, right?

Yeah, I'd definitely agree japan has more of a case of inappropriately timed fanservice then the US. And if we're just comparing animation fanservice then yeah, japan definitely has a ton more because well, what everyone else said. US cartoons are almost exclusively targeted for kids, and the ones that aren't are hardly bad (usually).

Whereas in japan there can often be two seperate airings for a particular show, one in the morning that ignores all the fanservice (I know gurren lagaan at least got this for one of the episodes, wouldn't be surprised if it got it for the other fanservice episode, although it was a lot more tame so maybe not) so the kids can watch it, annnnd one later in the evening that pulls none of those punches so to speak.

Pretty fan-servicey if you ask me. But i guess the difference is that they're walking, continuous fan-service vessels, rather than regular characters with a "fan service moment". So their fan-service feels "less jarring", because that's basically all they are.
