Goddamn. So that explains it.

Also when I posted that I hadn't read through the thread and didn't realise it had been necro'd and re-railed onto a kinda different discussion. Whoops. Regardless, the only animes that I have enjoyed were Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle (well, I only really liked that one because I had actually read the book it was based on years before, didn't really remember it, and so the whole film consisted of these really weird deja vu moments as I wondered, "Where have I heard this before?!") and Dragon Ball Z. The latter, looking at it objectively, was utterly terrible; but I watched it with just about all my friends as a little kid and now whenever I see it I nostalgia hard. :P
I've watched quite a lot of others, never liked any of them, I'm afraid. I'm happy to shell out quite a wad of cash to procure DVDs of my favourite cartoons, though.

The cartoons I watch are better than the cartoons you watch.

I will argue this point with you for days.  Not only are my cartoons better, your cartoons are better when I watch them.

Also, you guys are forgetting The Brave Little Toaster?  FernGully?  Fucking Space Jam?

Dear God Space Jam, there's one thing that should've never existed.

I thought about mentioning Space Jam, but it had live action in it, though it's in the same style as "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". I liked it, even though it's rather marketing then anything, the nerdlucks are still some of my favorite characters.

I also hate Space Jam, but only because that movie is the high point of the universe's history.  Everything since then has been downhill.

Never was a fan.... of any of it to be honest. There never seemed to be much variation and originality in anime to me. The characters all look pretty much the same, their expressions are usually too cheezy/too serious/too cutesy for me. There's just something shallow about it. I guess I just don't get it. I did try to read this one anime about vikings (which is pretty interesting to me to begin with), but then one guy looked like he was from Naruto or something and I was completely turned off...

Sorry, but I just had to get this off my chest. I realize a lot of you out there are kinda fanboyish about this stuff, so I'd understand if this thread was completely ignored... just let it sink to the bottom.
I'm definitely late, but...!

"Troner-kun doesn't like anime!?!? EEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHH?!?!?!?!?!?!"
I partially agree.  Some anime is good, but I'm pretty put off these days by the ones with extreme over reactions or extreme facial expressions.  Or anime with a lot of tiresome shonen tropes that just detract from the show :/

Can't we just discuss something more meaningful like the relative merits of archaic Japanese weaponry?

I think I'm a little late.

I don't like anime too. I came across many great games but I didn't even think about playing them because they were anime. Expressions are like, alien, with giant eyes and stuff. Characters are not close to being original. Every character pretty much looks the same. You know, stupid hair, strange colored eyes, shape of the face and things like that. I'm not a big fan of western animations too but at least they had varied characters. I really understand you OP. I have an urge to scream when I'm surrounded by anime fanboys. Still, it's not as bad as being surrounded by Twilight fanboys.

"Western animation" is big. A crapload of different cultures and countries are doing it and that's why it seems varied. Anime is based on one culture and we got a lot of it. Quantity of anime is really getting the quality of anime down.

19-20 x4 seems a little weak.  I'm thinking 17-20 x4 is a bit more in line with the vuvuzela's power.

I'm very late to this necroed topic, but this is largely how I feel.  I haven't let my distaste for anime prevent me from playing a game that was anime themed, but it does detract from the enjoyability of it sometimes.  I'm sure there are games that are so strongly filled with anime tropes that I wouldn't play them, but I probably wouldn't like them for other reasons.

That's really it: I just hate anime tropes.  Because I'm not accustomed to them, whenever I see anime all I can really see is the tropes jumping out at me.  That in turn makes it feel like all anime is the same, even though I know it's not.

Other than the tropes, a disproportionately large amount of anime that I've seen any significant amount of is filled with things that are just downright strange and offputting.  I can't think of any specifics, but the fascination of putting Japanese demons in anime probably has a lot to do with this.

I really can't watch anime that doesn't try to be more or less "normal".  Something like Gundam Wing, for lack of a better example.  The wacky expressions and freaky supernatural stuff aren't getting in the way of watching it for me.

Does "normal" here mean "American-seeming"?

That's probably one way of interpreting it.  I thought I had a better way of describing it, but it turns out I don't.   :-X

I do find it hard to believe that anyone could consider anime to be more "over the top" than cartoons when it comes to facial expressions/etc. I mean, not every cartoon is Ren and Stimpy with popping eyeballs, but western animation definitely has a habit of exaggeration.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
