ArmA2 now released for "free" - link 2nd page.
« on: June 09, 2011, 11:57:30 am »

Bohemia Interactive is releasing a version of their flagship war game/sim ArmA2 for free. It's like a super-demo of sorts.

http://www.arma2.com/free
or via RPS.

Well, minus mods, campaign, and HD graphics, and did I mention mods?

However, you will be able to use the hilariously fun editor and be able to play multiplayer minus mods without paying anything.

I assume this is free marketing for their actual campaign/ability to use mods (which seriously makes the game) as well as the announced ArmA3 next year competing in a tight field of BF3, COD:MW3, RO2, and other shooters.

After some annoyances, it appears there is no actual download for this at this time. Nor do I see any information on what they mean will be missing when they say they've removed the "HD graphics." Is it stuck at 800x600? Is it not going to be able to run on a widescreen resolution, meaning it will look horrible on my monitor? Does it just have a low amount of detail? Etc.

It just says "Coming June 2011" so it could be tomorrow or the 30th, or heck, July :P BI isn't too bad on release dates though.

And I'm guessing Soulwynd is right.

They already did the textures thing with all of the DLC (sans Operation Arrowhead of course, but that's its  own game)
I'm really not surprised that they're doing that for the actual game now.

I'm a little surprised they'd cut mod support, since if there's anything worth playing in Arma its on modded servers. Still, getting a feel for how the game works should be enough to entice a few more buyers into their milsim fold.

I'm eagerly awaiting RO2 anyway. Tight field or not, I've got time for two very different settings.

The textures in ArmA's free content are horrible.

I mean, it doesn't ruin the game, and Dorfs players should be used to bad graphics, but still.  You're hunkered down behind a wall taking fire from Taki militia, and then you look up and there's some kind of deformed clay golem masquerading as your squad leader.

It's traumatizing.

Uh.
That's exactly why they cut mod support.
Why would you buy the game if you could access everything it has to offer already?

[That's not even considering that there's a fair number of texture improvement mods that would inherently override their low-res stuff...]

Sounds like a feature to me.

Your squad leader is a T-600?

LOL! I've been waiting for this to come on sale on Steam for so long. Missed the sale month or two ago, almost gave up and paid 40e for the whole package.

Thanks for the news!

If steam does another summer sale like last year, end of june to early july, I'd pick it up then for mod support.

It'll probably be dirt cheap sometime during that week.

Let us hope. Though July is still so far away...  :P

I wonder if this counts for things like the BE warfare mod?

But I'd suggest getting combined ops because it is one of the most fun games out at the moment

Also, if this drums up enough support here would anyone be interested in getting a dedicated server?

If we schedule up time for various OPs I could probably just run the server :P
