Im not certain.  It works in genesis but Deon or Tomi may have axed all the exotic tags as well.

If you are going into the raws anyway then make em trainable.  war cave crocs are awesome

Or make the DM appointable by the mayor.

I've heard that doesn't actually work. You get the position but not the training ability. Confirm/deny?

Confirm.  Even if you mod the DM to be manually appointed, he doesn't do anything.  Genesis mod makes the DM appointable, but also removes the [PET_EXOTIC] tag so he isn't needed.

Yes, DMs don't work at all, no matter how you mod 'em.

I've been doing this already  :P

I always try to have an army of Subterranean Crocodiles for dwarf power, and DWARF POWER!

Speaking of subterranean creature armies, which tameable/trainable creature would be the most lethal and effective war machine? 4
Cave crocs allow you to get an army in less than 3 years of getting a breeding pair, but a war cave croc wouldnt be as powerful as a war giant lion/war giant rutherer/war voracious cave crawler, now would it?

I would say GCS army, Helmet Snake army, or a Rutherer army.

GCS army: Paralyzed goblins. 'Nuff said.

Helmet Snake army: Goblins will bleed, rot, and swell in their own puddle of pus.

Rutherer army: FREE ARMS FOR EVERYBODY! ARMS FROM EVERY BODY FOR EVERYBODY! They like to tear arms off...

i'd say jabberers, but if you consider breeding speeds then cave crocs look better. they'll die en masse yeah, but 40 eggs if 40 times more than one!

Funny thing is, the limit doesn't apply to egg laying creatures. You could have 2000 crocodiles and they'll still lay eggs.

Toady probably limited the amount of pregnancies but not fertilizations.

They'll lay eggs, but those eggs won't hatch.

One of my starting seven once had a female cave crocodile as a pet. Goddamn, for once it wasn't a grackle or some shit.

As a proud Cave Croc Rancher and owner of a few hundred beasts, I can testify that the eggs, fertilized or not, stop dropping until you butcher a few of 'em. Build a few nest boxes, designate a pen and chuck a few females in, lock the doors, and forget'em. Open doors every few years to cage the hatchlings (mass cage and deploy them during the first year unless your dorfs all have over 9000 strength) It's quite impossible to thin 'em out save for pitting them into lava, with three butchers and kitchens, five craftsdwarves workshops. I have to dump all non-masterwork bolts.

If there is a formula to allow you to buy a breeding pair at embark without adding 999999 points (damn embark screen teasing me with tame great eagles as buyable pets and the the civ only offers great eagle MEAT afterwards), use it.

Otherwise, breach the cavern ASAP, cuz there's gonna be some waiting. Cave creatures "cycle" pretty fast once you have an efficient (read : killing everything that isn't a cave croc) military. I'd pass Rutherers - their reproduction rate is not worth it. I had like ten of them, penned them at the bottom of a dry moat situated under a retractable bridge, they all died to four goblins who'd withstood five Z-levels' worth of broken legs. Arena purposes maybe, against naked enemies... With fifty crocs and so many to spare inside the "no-lag quantum shared cage", you don't think about equipment anymore. I certainly wouldn't even think about sending less than thirty crocs against even one goblin, haven't tried one-on-ones to be honest, but opening a crocsplosion cage from a lever in your dining room is the dorfiest thing in the world.

Final argument : ☼cave crocodile egg roast [169]☼ = 50-60k☼ a pop.

It is possible to get a stack of 240 roasts, if you get 4 stacks of 60 eggs (their max).  This alone will feed your fort for several years...  For war animals, voracious Cave Crawlers if you can breed them enough.  They're pretty big and vicious, but numbers count more than mass.  That is, of course, assuming you're not breeding cave dragons...

Sounds awesome. I was going to make cage traps for caverns anyway in hope of getting GCS.

What would you recommend for leather farming? Caravans barely bring any unless I order them from liaison, and I need hundreds to properly outfit military.

unless you're in some challenge you'd better be equipping your soldiers in metal or at least bone. Out of a common armor set, only high boots, armor and shields can't be made from bone and shell, and shields can be wooden instead

Leather is kind of a harder one, because no egg-laying animals (the fastest to breed) can produce any. Then, you have a choice: few animals producing lots of leather, or dozens producing two or three units?

Don't use leather for your military, i'd say. Use metals. Even copper is better than leather.
