Pressure plate linkup, never finishes
« on: April 17, 2008, 08:21:00 pm »

So I'm having a bit of trouble with a pressure plate.

I'm doing a good old fashioned bridge-covers-pit trap. I've got two bridges, one after the other, and two pits. Between the two bridges are the pressure plates.

The idea is that gobby A steps on the first row of three pressure plates, and any friends following behind him go down the pit. If he continues forward, he trips a second row of pressure plates, steps onto the bridge in front of him, and it disappears. Simple enough.

Thing is, one of the 6 pressure plates just will not link to its bridge. I've had my mechanics working on it, literally non stop, for almost 2 years. The other 5 link up fine. I can build pressure plates to other devices and they build.

Rebooting the game does nothing. Removing the plate and starting over does nothing. It just won't link. Any suggestions?

Is it already linked and you don't realize it?

Are your mechanics actually going to do the job?

Try choosing different mechanisms. One of the ones your choosing could be magically inaccessible or just plain missing. It happens every now and then for no apparent reason.

The mechanic is definitely working on it. He and the apprentice mechanic will take alternate shifts banging away on it for days at a time.

Its not already linked; I've seen several goblins walk across it and trigger it (dark pink) without any actual movement of the bridge. The adjacent pressure plates *are* linked, and will trigger the bridge very quickly.

The mechanics get through the first half of the operation, which is installing the mechanism in the bridge, but never the second half, at the pressure plate.

I think I'm going to de-construct the bridge and start over from scratch today. I'll update as things develop.

This actually seems like the bug, which goes all the way back to the 2D version, that each mechanism that you use takes exponentially longer to link up. So, after two floodgates you might be looking at twenty-minutes, after two floodgates and two bridges it could be two or three hours. I noticed in my games in the old days eventually it would take so long that no mechanic of any experience level could complete it without drinking/eating/sleeping, meaning that the task could never actually be completed.

If you've got a save post it and poke Toady to take a look at it, because the bug was ridiculously irritating the first time around.
