Blinking tiles?

I'm really disappointed with the feel of steel tiles which look like gabbro, or adamantine ones which look like microcline. So I thought that slight flashing (for example light grey - normal grey) would create a nice effect, which would also differentiate these materials from more common ones. Like gem windows look different than glass windows. But how to do it? Is there any tag for materials which would enable two or more colors?

Evil grasses have this:
        [GRASS_TILES:242:243:169:170]
   [ALT_GRASS_TILES:243:242:170:169]
   [ALT_PERIOD:200:100]
But I doubt it will work on other things.

It would work if they had GRASS tiles. :)
