If you need extra credit for english, just put Nabokov's Lolita on your list. That worked for me.

I am currently reading "The Divine Comedy", love it, such a masterpiece.

Let's see... Paradise Lost. God's Demon. Feynman Lectures on Physics (vol. I). Uhm... That new book, The Good Book: The Humanist Bible.

I think that's it.

Finished reading I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.  Kind of disappointing.  Decent enough story...  But it was brief, and the writing style was pretty disjoint.  I guess I expected something more from such an iconic story.

There's more Ellison stories in that book, but I'm not sure I want to read them right now.  I was really kind of looking for some good sci-fi...  Something like Dune or Neuromancer or Snow Crash or Starfish...  And I definitely didn't get that from this story.

Don't know that I'm in the mood to read more stories in the same vein.

I'm kind of feeling like I did when I've tried to read the LotR books.  Such iconic stories that are beloved by so many people, and I don't like them...  Feels like I'm going to be asked to turn in my geek card or something.

The book I'm currently reading is The Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg.
You'd think it's actually quite simple, but it basically says "If you want to understand the Tarot, you have to understand Russia first".
The first third of the book is about History and Culture, the second about the symbolism in the cards and where it originates from and the last one actually tells you how to read it.

A pleasant suprise I must say.

Rather than start a separate thread I thought I'd ask some of you here...

Someone told me about a fantasy series in space (large series, about 10 books or more) focusing on a female commander. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of this but apparently it's fairly popular. I'm looking to get into a new series since I've reread Dies the Fire about ten times.

Currently reading through all of Pat Mills' 2000AD Sláine comics which has been mostly great.

Besides that I'm reading through Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy again. One of the few books I'm able to read again and again.

Vattic is the only person I know of on the internet (besides myself) who actually remembers 2000AD and the related content. A shame. I have a 1986 Nemesis book around here somewhere and I've no idea how uncommon that sort of thing is these days.

Finished re-reading Cities in Flight. So many Xanatos Gambits.

Goddamn unabridged version of The Tale of Genji. It's interesting enough to read, but it is slower than a mixture of tar and molasses in January. Three weeks in and I'm only 650/1300 pages in.

I have also Nemesis 2 and 3 around (in Finnish), bought from antiquarian bookshop quite some years back.

Also I am probably going to read Gaimans Sandman (whole series) after I have finished my current books.

Honor Harrington, from the sound of it. By David Weber, an author who I like well enough.

I found By the White's of Their Eyes on my bunk yesterday. No one knows where the hell it came from. It's an uncorrected proof, strangely enough. The books that I come across in strange ways are often my favorites. It's about the Battle of Bunker Hill (first realish battle of the revolutionary war). While the writing isn't perfect (it's getting better as I'm going though, and it IS a proof), the author is going to clear pains to try to write the story of the revolution without the normal problems. In just about every single work I can remember, the revolution of America is either presented as knowingly false, patriotic epics, or "THE FOUNDING FATHERS WAZ IN IT FOR TEH MONEZ FUCK YOU AMERICA" historical revisionism. I despise both.

Great author, btw. Don't know this book, though, I'll look for it.

About 150 pages away from finishing the 800 page book Battle Cry of Freedom - The Civil War Era, by James McPherson.

I got it as a Christmas gift from a relative who sends obligatory gifts every year. So on vacation a two weeks ago I started reading it. I don't even particularly like the Civil War compared to other history, but I love history of any kind. And this is so thorough, and weaves all the politics, economics, morality, personalities and warfare of the Civil War together into one tight thread. I feel like I learned more from this book than all the isolated Social Studies classes I took in high school. And it is sort of enlightening to read how politicians 150 years ago were just as nasty to each other and entrenched in their own positions as they are today.

Kind of funny, I'm reading it now in my free-time about the same pace I read books in college to meet deadlines.

I've been wanting to read something by Kafka out of sheer morbid curiosity, but I get the impression a translation is a shadow of the actual work when read in German?
