Next two books I'm planning to read (after The Old Man and the Sea) are Martin Eden by Jack London and Aku-Aku: The Secret of Easter Island by Thor Heyerdahl.

Reading Ulysses.
You're a far braver man than I. Godspeed.
It's one of the few books I haven't been able to just blast through in a night or two. I refuse to be beaten though. Any book this weird is worth the battle.
Ulysses is great if you can get past Joyce's arrogance. And how willfully obscure he can be. Where are you at in it?

I just finished reading the Fellowship of the Ring, which I'd never read before. I have to say, hobbits are the perfect little English gentleman. I'm reading Two Towers now, of course.

Lately I've been trying to find some good, modern short story writers. It's not something I know a lot about, unfortunately. My knowledge of fiction tends to get spotty after 1960 or so, leaving out genre fiction. Any suggestions?

It depends on what you're looking for. I like kind of lit western stuff. Ron Rash, Annie Proulx, Sherman Alexie, and I recently got a Barry Lopez collection. I'd actually recommend you check out The Best American Short Stories series. It has a pretty good selection of "literary" stories and most of the authors have collections and novels published so you can follow up on any you like.

You know, I actually have a collection of his stories somewhere in my home that I've never read. Proves I should pay more attention.

Sherman Alexie I've read some of, never heard of Ron Rash or Barry Lopez. It's always exciting to find someone new, thanks!

Finished The Shadow Over Innsmouth today, only two more stories and I'm done with Lovecraft for the time being.
Afterwards I have five books to choose from. Probably will read Kafka, Freud and then more Kafka.

Various short stories by Jorge Luis Borges

Love. This. Man. Seriously, magical realism at some of its best. I got 'Labyrinths' which is a collection of his short stories, for Christmas and it sat for years unread until I picked it up on a whim.

My favorites were The Library of Babel and The Circular Ruins. His stuff is like one part Lovecraft dream fantasy, and one part Neil Gaiman magical realism.

Yep. I think the similarity between Borges and Lovecraft becomes particularly clear when you compare The House of Asterion by Borges with The Outsider by Lovecraft.

BEOWULF! For the first time. And not some prissy simple-english version either. Beowulf would make for a great DF adventure. In fact... a fair portion of it sounds a lot like a DF adventure already.

I have read all the Martin books of the Song of Ice and Fire series, but I just COULD NOT get into the 5th book.  Instead , I started reading The Legacy of the Drow series by RA Salvatore.  I'm currently on the 3rd book.

It's complete nerd mind trash but I seriously can't stop reading it.  It's just a really good story... a friend turned me on to it recently.  Have heard about it for years though.  I wish I would have started reading them a long time ago  :P

I'm currently reading "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. The philosophy it is pushing is interesting, though it makes some glaring assumptions that aren't true.

Before this I read "I, Robot" for the first time. Very good, and motivating. Helped to remind me that short stories can work together.
