I've read The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, and I'm about half way thou The Two Towers.
The ship sinks!

No, wait, wrong spoiler.

He's a ghost!

...nope, still the wrong one.

They all did it!

...hmm,

In other words, enjoy your read, even (especially!) if you saw the films.  I remember having to pester the library, a good three decades back when I was trying to read TLOTR, when the third book wasn't on their shelves after I had read the other two.

Mind you, I also pestered them for one of the books in the "Mission Earth Decalogy" by everyone's favourite religious founder[1], which was also missing from the shelving and stymied my progress through that section of the shelves, so I know (in hindsight) that I wasn't particularly discriminating at the time...

[1] This offer of "favouritest religious leader" is available in the shops, but may not apply: to Christians; Mohammadeans; those who are otherwise Abrahamic; devotees of short squat fat guys; of guys and gals with odd numbers of limbs, funny colours and/or animal heads; followers of Master Kong; spirit studiers of all kinds; 'dreamtime' specialists; cargo cultists; Earth Mother workshippers; motor-cycle repair manualists; IPUists; Pastafareans...   Did I miss anyone[2][3]?

[2] By more than a country mile, that is.

[3] Noting that I hadn't included my own religion of Next Thursdayism.

I am currently (And will continue for a loooooong time) Philip K. Dick Five Novels of the 1960s and 70s with Martian Time Slip, Dr. Bloodmoney, Now Wait for Last Year, Flow My Tears the Policeman Said and A Scanner Darkly

It's summer and the book is over a thousand pages long. Give me a break.

You remind me.  In my prior post I was going to (apart from being a little flippant about various things) report that I had finally opened Anathem (Neal Stephenson), the book I had reported that I was about to start somewhere near the beginning of this thread.

The dialogue (and exposition!) can certainly be considered obtuse.  On describing it to my Dad (and reading some sample paragraphs), he says it reminds him of the "Blackadder of the Future" sketch in Blackadder's Christmas Carol.  Still, I'm progressing through it fairly quickly, given that I only started it yesterday, and most of the day I was either driving around or involved in officiating at a sporting event, and didn't have much page-time to spare. :)

I'm still not sure what to think of Anathem. It's one of my favourite authors, but there's a limit to the amount of words you can invent for one book,

I began to read it, but was kind of turned down by that. And by an article on it I read, in which they complained that it was full of  Author Tracts

I've been reading On the Origin of Species lately.

I processed an original 1859 print copy of that book through customs like a month ago.  One of the more interesting items I've seen in my work.  It was worth a ton of money.  I've seen famous paintings shipped for 1/10 the price of that book.

I want to read the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, A Song of Ice and Fire, Faust, and some others I can't remember.

I just read The Passage, and it's okay.

Just finished reading A Dance With Dragons and I am already tearing my hair out waiting for the next volume, so I'm trying to decide between reading the last few Discworld books I've bought but not gotten around to, finishing Paradise Lost, or re-reading The Wheel of Time for the umpteenth time as I wait for the final volume to release...

I'm currently reading Deadhouse Gates. I have A Dance With Dragons and The Reality Dysfuntion awaiting after. (The former purchased, the latter from the library.) After that, I'm going after some classic horror: HP Lovecraft (really want to read The Shadow Over Innsmouth) and "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" are what I have planned.

However, I'm currently proceeding at a rate of half a chapter per day. This loss of focus will be fixed in a week or so - I hope. Good books are just too good to pass up this much.

I'm reading a bunch of non-fictional studies on vampire fiction tonight.

If any are actually good, I'll let you guys know.

The Tale of Genji is going slowly, but with every chapter it gets... better(?). The pace isn't picking up. It's still almost impossible to discern characters from one another. The poetry in it, though, gets better and better. Royall Tyler spent his life of translating every painstaking detail into words and footnotes has paid off well.

I haven't seen any of the movies, but I intend to watch them in order once I'm done with the books.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

That was a very good idea. That's how I did it and I'm glad that you are too.

I'm not so much reading this one as much as occasionally consulting it, but I recently bought a copy of the Smithsonian Handbook [of] Rocks and Minerals, largely due to the influence of playing so much Dwarf Fortress...
