Hold on. Dont skills affect critical misses?

Would improving the fortification go under my non-penalty for digging?
If so, then I improve the fort and attack the devourer, if no, then I help Ahra outta the hole, if he isnt swinging wildly at the devourer at that moment.

Skills basically allow you to do more. Since launching additional attacks in a round gives you a penalty, skills allow you to get extra attacks without said penalty.
Every three levels of a combat skill also allow you to reroll your lowest roll that turn.\

But I guess we can introduce a new rule
New Rule - Careful!
You take a -1 penalty to your attack, but critical failures do not result in damage to teammates.

To summarize, you can choose to modify your attack with any of the following... lets call them tactics.

Aimed Attack - Only launch one attack this round, +1 to rolls
Extra Attack - Launch an additional attack. -speed to rolls.
Target - Choose which enemy or enemy section you want to hit above all others. -1 to rolls
Careful - No chance of critical failures catching allies. -1 to rolls.

Ah, I get it now.

May I request that all my attacks with a pick be careful by default. So, no penalty right?

Also, If I were to make an aimed target attack, then I would void the penalty and get a +1 targetted attack?

[1][4] -> [4] You land a solid blow against the creatures [body], dealing 10-2=8 damage. [1] But your swing is wild, and you nearly clip Nirur across the shoulder, but he easily[5] avoids the blow.

Devourer 2 Tail: Damage Taken: 8 damage.

With a flick of your weapon, the creatures head finally separates from its body, landing roughly against the ground. It's body and tail twitch a few times, and then it lays still.

The Devourer is already dead, so you settle for improving the fort. You do a decent job - With the way it is set up now, most ground critters won't be able to get in at all, and flying critters will suffer a -1 penalty to their attack when attacking from outside the base - and you STILL get an additional dice when fighting them off!
Without a proper door, that's the best you can do, and the whole fort is now sunk down to the ebonstone to get the required dirt to do so.
