Who is this Weiner fellow? He sounds like an old friend of mine.

He's just some politician who turned out to be a huge dick.

I think we need to get more creative.

I haven't spent enough time around sophomores.

This matter requires a firm probing, with many penetrating questions and heated debates on back-room morality. Only then can we judge the length and girth of the matter. Only then will we move beyond soft reasoning and bring the entire situation to a head.

Also, sophomores? Pffft dick and fart jokes are where the money's at. My grandma said that. Fine Catholic lady.

Clearly we've yet to get a full grip on this situation. It's going to take many repeated passes, vigorously working out the details until the truth is unleashed.

Weiner seems to be claiming to have a compulsion. I find this laughable. Yes, Weiner, you have a compulsion to engage in lewd flirtations with women. It started in puberty, and it doesn't stop until you're dead. It's called being a heterosexual male, and everyone else you're making excuses to has managed to not internationally humiliate ourselves. Hell, some of us supress the urge so well we can pass a polygraph denying it.

Serious mismanagement of the scandal, though. He should have come clean about it immediately, resigned, gone into a Zen garden, and disembowled himself.

There is one big reason that Weiner has a chance of continuing a career in politics after dropping the ball bigtime, that he never campaigned on being a moral person.  I could probably rattle off a dozen politicians who were elected or maintained elections by trumpeting their "family values" whilst hiring prostitutes or screwing their staffers.  When you campaign on the sanctity of your personal life, and then get caught with your pants down, your personal life becomes the public's business.  If you've never pretended that your pants managing skills are a reason to vote for you, then it's embarrassing sure, but it's not a reflection on your quality as a public servant.

Weiner's mid-week Full Ginsburg to run his hacking lie is another matter, and how he could have possibly thought the politics-requisite non-denial-denial would work for something like this is pretty baffling.  When there's a photo of somebody's junk floating around on twitter, and you're asked if its yours, "Yes" and "No" are the only acceptable answers.  Nobody believes you if you say you can't be certain whether it's your own junk in the photo.

He's going to be clobbered with this to be sure in his own next election, and that's as fair as anything.  My advice to him would be to own it - he represents a slice of New York City and has the ear of Jon Stewart.  The best strategy for taking on personal embarrassments that mean nothing to your office is to make your human side your good side, attack yourself before anyone has a chance to attack you.  Own the panic, own the confusion, own the humility, and own the meat torpedo and rock hard pecs.

My advice to anyone who thinks Weiner should be used a cudgel against any other politician or party is they are making a dire mistake.  Let he without sin cast the first stone and all, so anyone who wants Weiner's junkshot tomfoolery to be a national issue should put on a helmet and get ready to catch some rocks.

That's been his saving grace in my book compared to other examples of flimsy morality across the aisle. When a Republican does something like this, they're almost always preaching from the handbook of Family Values (Hi Larry Craig). Being a democrat, Weiner wasn't trying to cram sexuality morality down our throats while holding office. So he's at least avoided being a total hypocrite in that regard.

So in this case, I just facepalm instead of getting indignant.

As for his chances, that's all up to his base. Sanford proved that you can fuck up a lot while holding office, worse than Weiner has, and you'll still have the support of your constituents if they support your message. Then again, he was a governor over there IIRC, so maybe he had more ability to keep himself in office.

My only real problem with weiner was how BADLY he lied, I expect a certain degree of competence from our lying politicians.
If he was going to bother to lie about it, he should have done it half decently compared to his "Um... it could be mine?".

I don't think this will really end his career either, since its not like he actually cheated on his wife (as far as we know), he was just a ass to her and sent junkshots.

See, while it's easy to attach a party to it, and certainly the preponderance of numbers would back that up, John Edwards is as guilty of this as anyone (alongside the genuine spending crimes).

Weiner still gets his pass, and if anything, I'd probably be willing to say the same Schwarzenegger.  He already had a long, proud history of sexual harassment and escapades before he was married, let alone before he ran for governor, and while he certainly didn't talk about it, he never pretended it didn't happen.  Nobody should be too surprised that he managed to sire a kid along the way, and I actually commend him for doing an upright thing of keeping the family out of the public's eye and making sure the mother never had to worry about supporting him.  You can call it buying off, but I'd call it doing the best thing with a bad situation.

That's because John Edwards was a southern boy with a southern constituency. Southern democrats kind of have to have a position on these issues. Even if you don't want to pigeon hole moderate southerners actually concerned about family values issues....a lot of noise gets made about it the Bible Belt and that's something I think any candidate has to respond to.

But I get your point. Not all Democrats avoid telling us how we should view family values, and not all Republicans campaign on Family Values.

I think the larger question is, how as a congressman named Wiener, could you not do what he did?

I would put my junk on yard signs and campaign literature if I was him.

If I was Weiner, I'd make wild accusations about my opponent's junk come next election.
"I believe that the public has a right to see my opponent's junk! I have shown you my junk. What does my opponent have to hide? Does he secretly have Inadiquate Junk Syndrome? Is he a female cross-dresser?! The public has a right to know the truth about <Opponent Name>'s junk!"
