Since discussion of Rep. Anthony Weiner's (D-NY) Twitter indiscretion (and jokes thereof) are starting to clutter up multiple threads, I thought it best to split out a seperate thread.

I think this notion that he's crazy is a phallus-y. He's clearly got a good head on his..umm, shoulders.


In all seriousness though....this presents an real issue for the Democrats. While I'm sure he'll get less than zero support from the party for re-election, he's also not resigning. Between him and the Edwards thing popping back up into the public consciousness (and in both cases, the perps seem to be saying the right things, but their actions and attitudes seem utterly defiant and unremorseful), the GOP is bound to try and turn this into a national issue. Assuming that Gingrich doesn't somehow get the nomination, in which case they'll be shutting up about it really, really quick. Don't be surprised to see pundits dredging up Elliot Spitzer as well. The more Dems they can invoke with their pants around their ankles in the wrong places, the better.

I can't think of any reasons that he would refuse to acknowledge whether or not the pictures were his, aside from 1. It's a publicity stunt that seems to be backfiring nicely, or 2. He actually did it. I think it's more 1 than 2, mostly because if it was 2, it would've been safer to just outright lie like most politicians do.

He wasn't sending it to people who weren't interested in seeing Weiner's weiner.

We're pretending like there's a theoretical person in power that wouldn't do something like all this.

My dad put it best. "People who are attracted to having and following a consistent, rigorous sense of morality are not generally attracted to the sense of power that comes with being a high ranking policitian." Or something like that.

Well, as of the latest, he's flat-out admitted that he sent the pictures (although it was apparently an accident that he put them on Twitter rather than a private text). I have no idea why he refuses to confirm or deny if the crotch is his or not. Maybe he's worried someone is going to find a way to digitally measure him or something.


And yeah, I think the attitude of many is that if he had just come out in the beginning and said, "Yeah I meant to sext this one girl but I goofed and put in on Twitter instead. My bad." then people would have snickered for a few days, and that would have been that, mostly.

But just like Martha Stewart, or Bill Clinton, it's not the act itself that gets them in such hot water, it's the lying about it. Followed by lying about the lying and then changing your story multiple times. Dude, if you're going to lie pick one and stick to it.

I don't think he ever intended to admit it to begin with but when his initial story didn't hold water and this story grew legs (or other anatomy), he either panicked or his PR people took him aside and said, "Look, you gotta put an end to this. If you did it, fess up."


Edwards did the same thing. He denied the whole thing, then he admitted having an affair but said the kid wasn't his, then he finally had to admit that yeah, the kid's his. But he never did anything illegal or tried to cover it up! Except....y'know, for the rerouting campaign funds to hide her away and then covering the rerouting of the money. 


I think there's a damage control mentality that says, "Okay, if I admit to the least bad part of it, maybe they'll all accept that and go away and quit asking questions." But when you're a politician, that never works. Because there are always going to be people who will profit enough from digging out your dirt that they will devote full time and energy to poking holes in your story.

Remember: The cover-up will always create a bigger scandal than whatever you're trying to cover up.

You know, he even could have used this to help his popularity. If he had said somthing to the effect of: "Yeah, that's right, I did post a photo of my junk on Twitter! What are you going to do about it, huh?" I would have gained a mesure of respect for him. But sadly, Weiner continued the tradition of politicians knowing everything about sex and nothing about computers.
