I dropped a yak into a volcano, and the message came up, as it had seen some on the way down. It was pretty funny :P

Oh jeez, if the yak could see in, I would have released HFS before I even got a chance to mine :O

Pretty much this. Make for a great story, too.

"So, how'd you ever find the most precious of metals?"
"Dumped a yak into the volcano."
"...and?"
"...I forget, but we found it. I may have been drunk at the time."

Raw Adamantinite!  Praise the Yaks!
Also, new sig. :3

Wouldn't a sober drunk be more likely to make a mistake?

Yes. If the dwarf ain't drunk, it already has made a mistake.

True... and I suppose he'd also be less likely to care about the nuances of the Yak -> Addy process in the first place. And possibly more likely to shove a large animal into a volcano for dubious reasons.

Haha, I had something JUST like this happen earlier today in my map. A Rhino charged one of my Stone-Haulers who was inexplicably outside and standing near the edge of my surface-level volcano. He got knocked in and fell 65-zlevels down before evaporating.

I was just minding my own business, waiting for a production order to finish, and I got the message "Praise the miners!". I was like huh? I'm not mining, howd i get vision in the magma pools?! Took me a min to work out what had happen, haha.

A few months ago, a berserk ghost sucker punched one of my smiths down the volcano. "Praise the miners!," etc.

It was the first time I'd ever legitimately discovered it.

My first legitimate discovery came from breaching the caverns, but it was SPEED:0, so it doesn't count.

This was my third. My second was, of course, just building a staircase in such a perfect manner that I managed to avoid the caverns entirely and go straight to the semi-molten rock, hitting adamantine, releasing HFS, and having all my dwarves die.

I hadn't gotten my second migrant wave yet :')

Yes. If the dwarf ain't drunk, it already has made a mistake.

By default, Dwarves are born in a state of Knurd. (http://wiki.lspace.org/wiki/Knurd).
" People generally find being knurd excruciating, as their comfortable illusions are stripped away and all of life's terrors are exposed. (Is this what the Hiver feels like all the time?) When accidentally knurd, people hurry to get alcohol into them to restore the balance. In fact, they generally go too far, getting very drunk in order to a) make certain they aren't knurd, and b) get so comfortably illusory that the mind can't recall those terrible realities. "

See, Dwarves need a drink just to stay sober!

Too bad engravers don't immortalize whoever first finds the stuff in the fortress.

I actually discovered adamantine the first year of this current fort via a badgerman getting in a fight with one of my pigs and both falling into the volcano.
I actually did this intentionally a few times too. Though on several occasions the animal I pit into the volcano gets stuck a couple levels down, on open space, and dies right there.
