Instant Fatal Freezing?

I was just messing around wrestling a lamprey when the river we were in froze over in a single turn and killed us both instantly. What the hell happened? ???

In Dwarf Fortress, if water freezes it freezes instantly the second the temperature drops low enough. Being encased in ice kills you just as instantly.

It's like in Dwarf fortress Mode: people are walking across the frozen river when SUDDENLY SUMMER - everyone fall in water.

Honestly does the Instant fatal ice freezing remind ANYONE of "The Ugly Duckling"?

Because it always does for me. The scene where the water is freezing over and it is trying its hardest to break the ice before it encapsulates the duck.
