Free mod on Steam. Needs a source game. Maybe we can get a Bay12 server up, would be cool.

Empires is a mod for Half-Life 2 which combines the genres of real-time strategy and first person shooter. Each team has four classes to choose from (scout, rifleman, grenadier, and engineer). Each has unique weapons and skills. One player becomes the commander by entering the team's command vehicle to build the team's base and lead his team to victory. Once your base is built up, purchase vehicles from your team's vehicle factory to open up another facet of Empires' gameplay. Vehicles can be customized with unique weapons, armor, and engines. The commander can research improvements to all aspects of vehicles such as longer range cannons, homing missiles, and armor-piercing machine gun rounds. Once your team is prepared, lead an assault into the enemy base. The enemy team is defeated when all players are wiped out with either no place to respawn or no reinforcements remaining or the team's command vehicle is destroyed.

It is a source RTS/FPS hybrid.
There are 2 teams and of each team there is 1 guy who is "The commander" he places buildings which the engineers have to build, researches vehicles which players have to drive, armor, engines, ammo and weapons.
The commander plays the game like a regular RTS but can also get out of the command vehilce and give someone else control, he can give units/players orders on what to do and where to go, no matter how strong your tanks and builings are, if you have a bad commander chances are you are gonna loose.

The players who are not the commander can be a range of different classes and play the game like a normal FPS but it if you want to win it is advised that you listen to the commander.

There is a lot more which can be said about the game with vehicle customisation and all that but don't have the time to do so at the moment.

You can get it from steam by searching in the steam store for "empires mod".

Oh, I loved that mod/game.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Maybe you should put some pictures and info on here for people who don't know what it is, I wouldn't mind to put it here in this post if you want.

Shame I live in australia though.

Ah well, the ping should be good enough to be commander.

Agreed, could use more info in the OP. Looks fun though, like... crap I can't remember any of the games this is like. Savage? Was that one of them? I'd join if there was a group playing.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Yeah, this looks like a slightly simplified version of Savage/Savage 2: A Tortured Soul. There's an easier install link on Steam (just search Empires in the Store), but here's their main website:

Looks interesting. Considering my only Steam games are Team Fortress 2 and a free copy of Portal, does that qualify as Source?

Would Portal still count if it was a free copy?

This actually sounds really interesting.  You'd need a decent team though, otherwise I can see it all going to pot rather quickly.

Got about an hour before it downloads so any time after 10 est and I would totally be willing to give this one a shot. Nick is halfman currently on steam if anyone wants to give me a shout.

Portal is portal. It runs on the same engine whether you bought it or they gave it to you.

Well that depends, is it a source engine game?

This game is a Half Life 2 mod, so you need either Half Life 2, Day of Defeat Source, or Counter Strike Source to play it.

Except it only uses the source engine. Not any files from HL2 or any of those games you just mentioned. As long as you have the engine it should play.
