iPod Touch / iPhone Games
« on: June 06, 2011, 04:38:31 pm »

I've been fairly bored while away from my computer a couple times, and have largely ignored my iPod Touch as a suitable gaming system. After having read an article regarding the "fall" of portable gaming (http://www.the-ghetto.org/content/nintendo-and-their-3ds-dilemma-part-one), and having left my PSP in the dust years ago, I've turned to my iPod as a portable game fix.

The dilemma I've encountered is the lack of tangible evidence for "good" games on the platform. The "free" ones are usually limited in how long you can play them; paid games can be good, but I have bought a few that ended up being not worth it. And review sites are usually biased in one way or another (not saying that no one is unbiased, but still).

It boils down to this: What good games have you guys played or heard of on the platform? My iPod Touch is the newest generation, and acts for the most part as if it is an iPhone, just without the excessive amount of money on a monthly plan.

My current games include World of Goo (a steal at $2.99), Cut the Rope, Pocket God, Bejeweled 2, Battle for Wesnoth, Plants vs Zombies, Solitaire, and Papa Sangre.

Looking at your list, there is a severe lack of Angry Birds, the hardest "casual" game I've tried.

I suggest Civilizations Revolution for the Ipodtouch, very fun game thats replayable for quite a long time.

I had seen this, but the price tag along with my largely bad experiences with later iterations in the series left me wary. I'll try the lite version at least.

Was never really a fan of those catapult games.

The Ipod version of the game is actually pretty spot on, not really dumbed down. Worth the money since I bought it awhile ago and im still playing it today.

Game Dev Story is good if you want a fairly simple management game.  Infinity Blade is fun because you can sink almost infinite amounts of time into it, if you're fine with the somewhat repetitive nature of fight, fight, fight, lose/win, back to start (with enhanced items and stats).  Forget Me Not is basically a Pacman roguelike.

And Swords and Sworcery EP is probably the most solid game there, it's something like a point and click deal with an amazing soundtrack and art direction.  Headphones are a must, though, making it less viable for an on-the-go thing.

Words with Friends is great if you have friends  :o
I enjoy Catan very much, a remake of Settlers of Catan with a decent AI
I like Carcasonne for a very chill little strategy game
Strategery (spelled correctly) is an awesome Risk clone that boils down the best parts of Risk and you can play a game in 5 minutes, good stuff
I play Monopoly on WiFi with my wife all the time, we love it

Dungeon Raid is the most fun I've had with my Ipod, it's sort of like a dungeon crawler version of bejeweled, I guess?

I'll repost this from the mobile games thread

Uh, I would give out a recommendation to Song Summoner by Square Enix, and War of Eustrath, both being turn based strategy games that manage the feat of having full sized complex storylines while being on an Iphone.

The unique thing about Song Summoner is that you generate all your troops using songs in your music library, you input a song and a Tune Trooper is created. And then when you listen to those songs the game keeps track of it, and awards you points that can be used to level up the relevant Troopers.

War of Eustrath plays sort of like Super Robot Wars, which is pretty appropriate as it's essentially giant robots inserted into your basic Medieval Fantasy, and is a remake of an old computer game called Battle of Youstrass. The plot is pretty good, with quite a few branching paths, though the dialogue has the occasional spelling and grammar error due to being translated but it's not that often.

I will add in Ticket To Ride, another great boardgame adaption. Also, Game Dev Story was mentioned, most of the Kairosoft games are good. Lets see here...my iphone is loaded with game like crazy...

100 rogues is still my favorite roguelike for iphone, please someone tell me one thats better. I wish we had Crawl.
Tiny Wings - zen single button awesomeness
King of Dragon Pass - yup you read that right, a faithful port of the original game. A must have but expensive
Flick Home Run - kept me busy for a long time for some reason, not that deep but addictive for me.
Ingenious - a quick little puzzle remake of a Reiner Knizia boardgame, good AI. fun
SmartGo - play go on the iphone
High Noon - pvp gunslinger battle with upgrades
Scribblenauts - fun but too easy and WAY TOO FUCKING SHORT
Snow Fight - fun concept, not that great after a bit but for $1 what the hell
Triple Town - an oddly engaging puzzle game, love it! free version you have to wait for your moves to add up over a day or two to play a full game.
Super Crate Box - REALLY hard to play games like this on an iPhone, but still good for an elevator ride
Civ Revolution - been mentioned but it is very good
Jetpack Joyride - super fun single button goodness.

Theres more on my phone, maybe some other time

Puzzlejuice is the best arcade game I've tried. It plays like tetris, but when you get a row the blocks turn into letters, which you also have to combine into words. It truly deserves its tagline "this game will punch your brain in the face" because you have to play boggle and tetris at the same time, effectively.

RogueTerm

A telnet app used to connect to crawl.akrasiac.org, and play DCSS. I think it could even play Crawl on a 3g connection.

Starbase Orion and Ascendancy are good 4x apps if you are into those kind of games

All HalfBrick and Kairosoft games are good in my opinion (although once you have played one kairosoft game you have played most of them).

Tiny Towers and Dragonvale are good, free time waiting games (the ones where you wait for something before it happens). Both games offer a way to get the freemium currency, although Tiny Towers is heaps better in that regard.

OP mentioned it, but WoG is so amazing. My most favorite game ever.

Osmos and Countre Jour are both relaxing games with great soundtracks.

If you don't own it on PC, or want it cheaper, Dungeon Defenders is a very VERY good game based on Diablo meets Tower Defense meets action (you fight the battles)

Empire of the Eclipse looks very promising, I have been following it for some time now. It is slated for release within this month/next month. They take a while to develop things though.

The old gameloft games are of very high quality, and are generally worth checking out

Finally, Galcon is worth a look (I believe their is a lite version). It is a game where you capture planets, and then they produce more ships for you. The goal is to wipe your opponent out of the universe.
That's all from the top of my head, might mention more soon as more come out.

I'd assume most people with an ipod on them are also in possession of headphones.

So in my efforts to find a good iPod based strategy game, I stumbled across Starbase Orion.

The price is a bit steep for a mobile game, but I'm very glad that I did cave in with my little bit of extra spending money. If you've played Masters of Orion, it is a godsend of a strategy game for the iPod, but the controls are a bit wonky to learn at first. Really loving it so far. Seems to be updated fairly often too. Really don't like the Leaders, but it has been said by the devs that they're adding an option to turn them off.

Edit: Looking above, I can't believe I missed this a few months ago.
