The 67th anniversary of D-day.
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:00:37 pm »

Today is the 67th anniversary of the Normandy landings on 6th June 1944. The Normandy invasion had a great impact on the course of WWII, being a decisive allied victory and beginning the liberation of France. The landings were known as Operation Neptune, or more commonly, D-day. The entire invasion of Normandy was called Operation Overlord. The initial invasion force consisted of a variety of allied troops, including Polish, British, French, Norwegian, American, Canadian, Australian, Dutch and New Zealand(ish?) soldiers. First, airborne landings were launched to secure bridges and vital crossing points to reduce the Axis' ability to launch a counterattack on the beachhead and was imperative to the success of the Amphibious landings. After the airborne landings, an amphibious assault was launched to take the beaches of Normandy and create a beachhead. Operation Neptune was succesful, and later Operation Overlord. The D-day casualties are estimated at 10,000 on the Allied side and 4,000-9,000 on the Axis.

It's gone then. Sorry about that, it was the only thing I could find. I'll replace it with something if I can find anything.

I am always slightly annoyed everyone remembers the anniversary of D-Day, but nobody ever mentions Monte Cassino.

For the anniversary, you can figure out why the hell it was called D-Day. =U

D stood for day. D-Day means Day-Day, or more accurately the 'Day of Days'.

I always confuse D-Day with Dolle Dinsdag (lit.: mad Tuesday) which is pretty much this:
Dutch People: yay allies are coming ^^
Germans + friends: oh crap imma go (back) to Germany
This were all just rumors but the streets were full with people with american flag...

And Seal God, you sure about Days of Days? I though D-Day just meant the day a military operation started and not some acronym for the days of days

Ad who is Monte Casino anyways?

@Dutchling: The battle of monte cassino

The Normandy landings were a specific one day event, isn't the battle of monte cassino more than one battle? What day is the anniversary? You could make a thread on that day.

In Sweden, we have a saying that goes roughly (using day as an example, it could be any word) "the day with with capital D" to signify it's notability/importance/greatness. I would think D-Day was formed either through a variant of such a saying, or that very expression if it exists in English as well.

In military planning parlance, D is the operational start date. All other days are referred to by reference to that, such as D-2 (2 days prior to start) or D+3 (3 days after the start date). So June 6, 1944 was "D". Since you typically add "Day" in English to commemorate a date (May Day, Flag Day, Arbor Day, etc.), it became known in common parlance as "D-Day", even though technically every military operation ever has a D-Day. I suppose the technically accurate title would be "Operation Neptune Day", but then than would omit other operations which were related but constituted seperate supporting operations.

Somehow history forgot the bloodiest campaign in Western Europe during that war.

D-Day stands for "Debarkation Day", the unnamed date on which military operation will take place. H-Hour is similar, and denotes the particular time that the operation takes place. This allows military planners to schedual timeframes relative to the day the operation begins, rather than fix the timetables to a particular date, have the enemy learn what day it is, and have to move the date and rework all the timetables and orders, ect.

Anyway, today on the 7th of June, 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy retired from the Battle of Midway four carriers the poorer. This battle brought a balance of naval power to the Pacific that the Japanese would never again tip in their favor.

Seems like a war memorial thread is in order. Then again, that would just be bumped every time that it is the anniversary of an event and what would we actually discuss?

Holy shit! Just read the casualty numbers.

Wars perhaps? Maybe we can remember them too!
