Absolutely love the Sunspot, all things considered. Pumping out projectile blockers drones with 1 cloaked zapped and 2 cloaked bombers, with 400% health and 35% production time. Also like how maneuverable it is for a huge ship, with room for my preferred 2 point defense arrays and 1 tractor beam.

I never use the Sunspot! Either the cruiser or the carrier...

Are drones that effective? How about the Point Defense? I installed a couple, but they fire so slowly if you don't invest in that tech :\

"If you don't invest in that tech" are the key points here. The way the bonuses are piled up on every level of a given tech, you get MUCH bigger boosts on the higher tiers. Add some good specialists to the mix, and you might have a decent fighting force - one that attacks automatically and doesn't break your cloaking. A certain plot mission involving hijacking and escorting a big ship through a minefield and some enemy ships, for instance, went a lot smoother with a cloaked Sunspot and cloaked fighter/zapper drones than with any other ship I've tried. Even in straight-up combat, Bomber drones pack a decent enough punch (at level 8 cannons) that they deal with smaller breeder ships almost faster than my turrets can swing at them.

The Sunspot is pretty much the only ship that makes the Drones worthwhile though, and it's pretty limited otherwise. It can't use missiles, and it's got just the one huge and two medium turrets - every ship but the Freighter severely outguns it. If the drones are busy elsewhere, it likely won't survive a direct confrontation with another Huge ship. But I like it so far. :)

Research screen, inconspicuous button on the top right when a category is selected. Costs data proportional to amount of levels being respecced, probably up to and including losing levels.

From what I read, you don't actually lose data, but you "owe" data that you must repay before you can keep leveling.

Just finished the game. I guess I need to replay the game on a higher difficulty or something, because the final boss was easier to kill than... well, I'm not sure. It was tougher than any single enemy, but was still a total pushover for a "final" boss, at least for the kind of tech you can acquire by the endgame. Or maybe it was the mass drivers. I wonder if I can reload, respec, and try it with beam weapons and missiles?

If you can be bothered, do it & leave some feedback... maybe it's something they need to take a look at.

Did it. Well, now it was a little more difficult, but I guess I just expected it to be, you know, invulnerable when it's not affected. As it is, I just sailed up to it with the Starcruiser, and held down both mouse buttons. A minute or two of careful watching of the shield (never got below 50%) and power (had to pause at some point), and the monster kicked the metaphorical bucket. My own mothership was never in danger, and I only lost my one medium and no more than two or three allied ships. It's probably the difficulty as well, I should give it a go on Hard. Mass drivers will probably still tear it apart though - its only "defence" is a frakload of armor, and MDs bypass that. Whatever shield it has is gone after the first shot from the mothership, and it never gets a chance to recharge.

Woo, finished!  Was a pretty decent game all round.

Except now I want the exact same game, but styled as a galactic conquest game against 7 other AI's.  :D

Hi Everyone,

We just released a huge tuning/balancing patch today, and I wanted to make sure you all knew about it.  We are really happy with a lot of the changes, and Chapter 4 in particular got a big tuneup.

Here is the changelist to get you excited :)

Added Added Hotkey (Y) for auto turrets
Added Drone research levelups will increase drone damage
Added Invading marines can now steal data, blueprints, blackboxes and release specialists, based on hacking skill in crew research tree..

Changed Missile booster: lowered reload rate boost, added damage boost.
Changed Beam booster, added damage and range boost

Changed Disruptor cannon slightly slower reload, Pulse cannon still old faster speed.
