Okay I have only been playing it for a little while so let me ask my questions...
WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE ZOMBIES!!?
No seriously, if the game title has zombies then it better be based around zombies.

Also if you've played the tutorial you've already seen 'em. "Space zombies" are even mentioned.

I am getting owned

Note that its armor is weaker on one side. Best strategy is probably to have your wingmen pelt it with anti-shield stuff (beams) and hit it hard with anti-armor stuff on that side (missiles are probably not the best idea since you can't really aim them).

You need to do the main story missions. 2-3 couple missions or so you get an upgrade, I think.

That is just the thing... Last hanger upgrade I got was basically the tutorial. Now I have assembled my laser. I am level 45 or something.

I have also started excuting the strat of pushing through every system at high speed, only stopping to collect BPs. If the BP owners are hostile I give them a few jumps to see if I can increase faction with them. If I can't do that quickly, I blow up their station and move on to the next crazy house.

I am using the ship with all the gun turrets on it and stacking cannons. I just got the disruptor so that makes me even more insane.

Are you sure you're not just lacking the blackboxes? Well at level 45 that would be doubtful but...

Oh lord. I've found that mines are not only overpowered, but they also tend to attract the attention of every enemy AI, causing them to make a beeline straight to your mine field. Almost feels like cheating, considering how much damage mines do, and the fact that you can create another mine layer almost instantly after you lose one.

Cannons haven't let me down in most cases but some times I wish I would have picked lasers instead. For instance, when you have a cloaked enemy you can't quite track down.

I also always put lasers on when you have the mission to clear the barrels or auto miners, it makes those far easier.

I got my upgrade finally. It is an event, and you'll know it when it happens. It gave me the ability to support large hulls, the first one I got was the "Sunspot". I think it is alright. I can support "cloaked zapper drones" but drones seem kind of under powered in general.

I have to agree with everyone that thinks mines are over powered, but I find myself reacting to them the same way the AI does... if you see a mine field you want to get in and blow up the launcher.

They feel like they get less useful as things go on(then again, I didn't put a ton of points into them), but yeah near the start they really destroy everything.  :D

I figure I can respec them once they become less useful, but considering I still only have three ships, one of which is a Helix (and two Colts with lazers; decimate their shield and then the mines do the rest), I will continue using them until that point. I really want to get into drones, because they always interested me in EVE and similar games, but grinding new ship types is somewhat painful at times.

Drones are, well...

For all intents and purposes, Drones are near useless. Unless you're cloaked and want to kill something, of course. Zapper drones might be useful in minefields, or against Critters, since they're so accurate. But really, unless you get the Sunspot, you won't see much use from drones in straight-up combat. The Carrier get much more mileage out of its eight missile launchers and double huge weapon mounts+turret - in a sense, it's not deserving the name. It's more like a Battlestar - jack of all trades, master of none (except aforementioned missiles). Only the Sunspot, with three large drone bays, can field enough of the little bastards to do anything useful.

How the heck do you re-spec?

I have noticed drones not being that useful. Zapper drones are weak for me because I went into cannons, so I use the blue level drones. I am also not super impressed with missiles. At lower levels they help a lot, but at this point they seem to play second fiddle to cannons. For instance, I can have a colt with 3 cannons and 2 upgrades (cannon and reactor I think) or a ship with two cannons and 2 missiles. Colt would win the fight.

missiles are nice cause they don't eat energy, so I am finding the couple well with beams.

Colt probably wouldn't win the fight against, say, a Turtleback (or whatever's that passenger-carrier in the Small class), with two normal Missiles, one laser, and two missile boosters. The laser would pop the shielding, and the missiles would blow the Colt into oblivion before it has a chance to chase down its target. If you like to play it safer, two lasers, one missile booster, one gravity missile, one normal missile. The Colt won't have a chance to close in. Against a craft built for stand-off engagements, a cannons-only fighter like the Colt needs expert piloting to get in close and do its job.

Also, if you play to the endgame, you'll notice that the Launcher techtree goes to, I think, 500% damage in the end, whereas lasers and cannons end up at 400% and 250%, respectively, IIRC.
