Yes, this thread, the Infested Planet thread and Terraria in general makes me think that $10 is that sweet-spot where most people will at least try it because it's indie and looks interesting, and if the gameplay solid, it goes viral and keeps on going. Multiplayer might have something to do with it though.

But terreria is boring and this game is too much grinding for goons to get through gates that I don't want to bother with fighting through.
I'm in no way having fun trying to use only 3 ships to defeat a junkyard full of larger ships that I cannot possibly beat.
The lack of being able to have a custom game with my own mothership instead of this box isn't helping either, I don't like their characters and honestly would rather make my own story in this kind of game until theirs gets better.
But this unlike terreria was worth the $ in the fact it acually gave me mild entertainment for more than 5 minutes.

Saint, you are honestly the only person I have yet to hear from, or of, who didn't like Terraria for at least a while. I don't doubt it, or even have an issue with it. It merely boggles my mind. What games do you consider worth your time?

One's that actually give me a challenge after I do 10% of the game.
Terraria is just too much bullcrap and easy enemys to apease their following dumb crowd that suggested pets, It's not any fun.
It's like going "camping" with an RV ("camping" because it's not real camping), there's nothing to it and it's just boring, roughing it in the woods with nothing but some rope, a tarp and my trusty knife is fun and challenging.

A few games worth my time would be ones that can provide a challenge to my wits. Holding my hand just pisses me off, I'd rather be punished for making a trivial mistake to the point of borderline having to restart the entire game than get through it with no challenge to cause me to actually consider engaging into a partial thought process to decide a course of action.

while it's surely fair to feel that way, most games have a general population of enemies and a smaller population of "boss" enemies that are substantially harder. Obviously I can't change your mind, but you should know that Terraria always got harder the towards "end game" (with some enemies being crazy hard despite gear) and is now getting even harder with this soon to be released update. SPAZ is finding it's own recipe right now, determining how much easy grind and how much difficult boss fighting. Thanks for giving me an answer, but I was looking for actual examples if you don't mind. I'm just trying to learn.

Oh, I'm more into games like Stalker and full spectrum warrior, arma, operation flashpoint, anything that is going to be realistic and challenging, punishing and overall hard. I enjoy games
That arn't as realistic or punishing and give a nice story as well such as Risen and Mass Effect. I have a thing for games that arn't as story oriented or hard but have just that special feel to them
that gives me a feeling of enjoyment, be it maybe playing with friends or something else, like bad company 2 or fable 3, it's just fun.
It's mostly just a sense of I enjoy games that make me have to think, stratagize and plan out my next moves very carefully all while thinking on my feet or even comprehending a good story to a game.

Wow! HUGE derailed commentary on games that "deserve" to be played aside, I found that once you get past the mid-game, you can do things with a fair amount of success and get to a level of play that is really fun. Plus the end game, the end game is the best part of SPAZ in my opinion (but I could actually do without the zombies and play against a single faction, civ or uta and be quite content.)

Saint - I know I'm new here - but maybe you could be a bit more careful with your tone. You sound mildly insulting/holier than thou, but I figure that wasn't your purpose :)

You might want to look at IL-2 Sturmovik (WWII combat flight simulator) and War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition (grand strategy, extremely complex. 1 hour's worth of thinking for 1 turn). They won't hold your hand, they'll probably chop it off if they see it. You might like it if you're into realism and difficulty.

SPAZ is more about you choosing the right systems to be in. You need to travel to those systems whose level is high enough that it'll give you a really tough challenge, and that'll make you level up faster. I realized that only after my first playthrough, and I'm guessing maybe you haven't gotten there yet. I always go for levels which are around or slightly above my own level. It's a challenge, even with the bigger ships, and every now and then you'll stay in battle longer than you should've, lose a couple of big ships and run out of rez, putting you in a very tight situation for awhile.

Also... just fight through the gates. I very, very rarely don't fight through them. You can always come back and do some missions to get stuff up. The only reason why I won't fight to get to another system is if I really need some tech that the UTA has, and either they're too strong for me to take down their base and steal it or I cannot find any missions to get them to like me enough to buy it.

I suggest you give it another go. Always go for high level systems (around your level), max the shield tech, and missiles work really well. I use those that split into lots of tiny missiles. Get your wingmen equipped with beam weapons, and once the shields of the enemies are down, blast'em off the skies with missiles. That should be a technique that works for a bit - and it's not the kind of works where it becomes a grind and trivial. Not if you're in the tough systems.

The game really comes into its own as you start getting the bigger and bigger ships, and more wingmen. I find the last part of the game to be the most interesting, with an element of high-level strategy which is really interesting, and that I'd like to see during the game too (perhaps you could be a faction too, I dunno).

We are hoping to get the next patch out in early August.  I am going to roll up my sleeves and get back to work on the specialist system as soon as I finish this post.  It is getting pretty exciting and I want to play with the new toys!

We also want to do a bunch of balancing for the next patch.  A big one for us is making some end game techs like lasers and armor more useful against zombies.  There will be some pretty big adjustments with the infected ships to keep the people who invested in techs aside from missiles and shields effective.  Also SRM missiles are going to get taken down a couple notches.  Man they can get insane late game.  We never had a chance to test everything out because of the game's length, and we are glad the community let us know how overpowered they are.

Anyhow I will be keeping a close eye on these forums and I hope to have some updates soon.

One interesting non game related thing is that we are having our first TV interview on Wednesday.  Both of us at MinMax are not the in front of the camera type of people, so it should be interesting.  The nerves have already started.

If you take SRM's down a notch, PLEASE don't do it by reducing the number of missiles. I *LOVE* the feeling of firing them all from that capital ship that has 5 or so launchers on its left side ;)

We will try to keep the number of missiles intact as we were going for that crazy swarm feel.  The booster SRM combo is just so overpowered so we will need to look at that.

Also I have awesome news.  We are now showing up on the Steam coming soon page!  We are very happy.  We got on the coming soon page, had an interview with Electronic Playground, and had our two year development anniversary all on the same day :)

pleasure overload.

Anyhow back to work on Specialists for me.  Cya everyone.

I tried a galaxy at the largest possible size, and the level gaps were still pretty wide (one blockade was 10, the next 28).  Is that how it's supposed to work?

Also, are there plans for more things to do, to give us a reason to have a world this large?  It gets monotonous pretty fast.

Finally, are Minmax keys still slated to be usable in Steam once the game is unlocked?  Saw it on the storefront, must be pretty exciting over there!
