I agree. Hacker Duality is a poor game in general despite having a nice new UI and sharp graphics there is almost no gameplay, let alone "open world".
SPAZ offers a lot for the small price tag.

you.. wow.. you AGREE with me! AWESOME!!!

People, you are free, your troubles are over, Hemmingjay and I have reconciled! Lol

But seriously, I feel ripped off real bad, all he did was show people beta pics that LOOKED like what he was advertising, a really neat voice changing tool here, an awesome looking ddos program there, and people were hooked and thought that THEY would get to make it or piece it together, or steal it or whatever, all in some randomly generated open world environment where you could ally with other groups, make a faction and team up in order to take down whatever target YOU wanted.

Right now I have,

I shitty ui with five buttons, each correspond to a set piece screen that doesn't even move, that corresponds to a boring and very uninspired mini-game. I was lied to, gypped, conned, and am kinda pissed at the fact.

Spaz is the polar opposite, a cheap indie game with 25+ hours of gameplay which is both deep AND engaging?

Or bastion, which is just plain bastion in all it's 13,50 euro glory.

Then theres HED, a 19 euro adventure game / puzzler that touts itself as "an incredible and deep hacking simulator".

Know what? FUCK you for lying, sheesh.. 19 euros down the toilet. Honestly I wouldn't touch that game if they paid me.

Tried it, the grind-style of it just didn't appeal to me very much. I can see why some people would call it fun though, and it was fun at times, but just too repetitive for my tastes.

The grind is what bothers me. I think I just need to give it a much longer break before playing (spent a lot of time with the beta version), but it's certainly a decent value for the price.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Oh boy!

Finally got this thing activated on Steam, and have spent more hours than I care to recall since then.

I did not find it to be too grindy, and I tend to get super annoyed with grind. It still has SOME, but you can definitely go around it.

I've been mostly in systems at or above my own level. With the increased amount of Rez and goons that you get now, lack of resources isn't really too much of a problem. The absurd amount of experience you get if you stay at these levels is great. I also know what technologies I'm going for, so I focus on those systems.

I was also fairly lucky with the specialists (which, by the way, are quite a nice touch). I got a couple of them that boosted my experience by a significant percentage. Totalled to around 25% once they were levelled up, and without the 33% bonus for specialist preferences. Anyway, an awesome thing to do is keep the specialists that do not fit your gameplay style and level them up. Once they reach master, dump them for absurd amounts of data. I got 4500 out of a high level one. That's an instant 2/3 high levels, and many more if you're below that level.

In general, I ALWAYS had something I was aiming for, and it didn't take me that long to get to where I wanted. Specific blueprints might be a pain to find, but honestly, I'm usually super busy fighting off stronger foes and levelling to worry much about that :D When I got to the last chapter, I had around 30 points to invest in higher level techs, which was a massive boost.

In general, I find that there's a bunch less grind than in the beta - but you do have to play it right. Invest in the right techs (SHIELDS!), and always take up strong enemies. You'll level quickly, and will always be engaged in interesting battles where tactics really count. If you're not thinking whether this is the best time to fire or to flee and repair, you're not doing it right :)

I think the devs have been here, so here's a couple of suggestions:
- Technology scouting: can't find the tech you're looking for? Buy a technology "roadmap" for parts of the galaxy for a price. I usually have way too much Rez anyway! At least you'll know where to go to get the Fortress Shield!
- Communication from a distance: pay some Rez/goons/data to communicate with a faraway station so you can buy blueprints/become friends/etc. Maybe a prerequisite is that you've already opened the gates. Right now seeing the arrival/depart animations is grating a bit on my nerves. I just want to get somewhere and do the thing that needs to be done.
- Warp gate defence intimidation: if your level is 5 or 10 above a warp gate's defences, you should be able to intimidate them and not have to fight. Some fights against lower-level foes become boring and "going through the motion", which is something you should avoid.

Cheers for the great game :)

In the prerelease version, I got as far as the center of the galaxy or something (didn't finish). Is the quest changed or something? Should I start from scratch for the release version?

I guess my question was, if I start from scratch, will I just reread all the whole dialogue from the first time around? Or is it completely different.

I'm guessing I'll have to start over anyways to enjoy the new mechanics.

dude, the game rocks, don't beat around the bush. Just check out which two came out the same day, for the same price.

Hacker evolution duality.... the BANE of indie games for it's HORRIBAD way of doing things.

Spaz.... really nifty game that lasts 25+ hours, all fun.

you guys who find it repetitive, and others looking to buy the game should also note that he is adding stuff as the game goes on.

and by adding stuff I don't mean one new ship here and there, like he's adding good chunks of new mechanics.
