The real question, I feel, is shields vs. cloak.

Personal opinion, cloak is way too slow and when it's down you're toast. Unless you pack on armor, basically making yourself immobile unless you have a cloaked minelayer or drone ship that doesn't need the maneuverability. Your AI pilots are pants-on-head morons though, so using mines basically means you try to do everything yourself while your goons suicide or lead everything away from your minefield.

I did like the deployable turrets for area denial though, on the odd mission you could actually use such things.

Doublepost necro across the sky! yeah yeah yeah... so intense

I picked up SPAZ 2 on sale last week and have been compulsively addicted to it ever since.

Pleasantly surprised to see how much stuff is workable, and that Expert difficulty is honest and doesn't use inflated numbers for enemy ships or a cheaty economy.

After trying snipers, carriers, and gunships I'm working on a miner-nose armored ramming ship. Charge across the map to slam into the enemy and snap its spine. And you get rewarded for it with their ship parts, more often than not. Amazing.

I remember looking at SPAZ2 when it first entered early access and being turned off by some negative reviews. I may have to give it another look...

I tried spaz2 a long while back and didn't like it due to there being no variety to ship design at the time. Putting all your cores in a line and making a long skinny ship was the only efficient option. I've read that they fixed that recently though so I might grab it.

Spaz 2 is fun, but lacks a bit in the variety and all that -as Ygdrad said.

I played through it once, which was some good hours of fun, but I'mma wait for the full release to play it again.

picked it up too. usually i stay away from any early access, but waitin so long for it i could not resist.
i think its a nice little game, and i had tons of fun :)
was rather short tho, only one chapter. but it ended with a clif hanger, so there is still hope for more.

as for the long narrow designs, i think boxy designs are much more efficient now due to increased synergy effects for cores that are connected to many other cores. with 15 cores, i found 3x5 to be very  effective.

ramming, its indeed totally awsome :)
risky tho. more then once i blew up my own nose and send it flying at almost realistic speeds into space to be never seen again with a to well executed ramming manouver XD

over all i do like the game a lot, i just whish there was more of it.

My tactics in early game was go full on laser, blow their shield, then ram them, very efficient, but yeah, if your nose lights flash, stop ramming, also points in armor helps with ramming as your parts get... well more armored up. Also dont ram without shield, its sucide. End game i went full on fightter with no other weapon at all, man that was fun to see the enemy die and not do a thing maybe exept a ram or 2 hehehe. Lasaer fighter are the best frigging point defense system i ever saw, forget these gatling gun, get laser fighter, they snipe missiles so fast, wreck enemy fighter, and even kill these smaller ship thingy quite fast too AND are accurate. I fear a nerf incoming on the laser fighter XD.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I did some math on synergy, for 10 cores. 5X2 bricks cost you about 20% damage for about 33% defensive stat gain over a 1X10 stick.

Experience seems to be that, when you have fewer parts with stars, a 2-wide brick is pretty good. Later on when you have a lot of 4-star cores you can get away with more weapon mounts in a U or n shaped frame and be fine.

Ramming is best when you have a lot of miners-manufacture parts, for the added armor.
