I mean really? They spend that much on promoting their games and then release some crap that would have been good and will be good once someone mods it.

Unless it's an X-box game, in which case it will be shallow crap that doesn't even work on my computer despite the fact that it's basically extremely similar to games made five or ten years ago.. but it will look pretty and be fun for three weeks for the X-box users

Just about every game that gets mass-media attention is some call-of-doodie or modern-gorefare crap, this causes genuinely good games to fall into obscurity.
 Not to say the aforementioned games aren’t good but I hate when the media makes some big whoopee over some generic "pretty-game" to be perfectly honest i can barely tell the difference between a wii's graphics and a ps3's
And just because a game was made in an "inovative way" dos'nt mean that the game is inovative itself.

I actually do think gaming is in a better spot then 5 years ago. Simply because - in my opinion - there's a way more diverse line-up up and coming.

Well you have a point, but i was simply angry due to the fact many good games are over shadowed by what’s basically a zergling rush of shooters, so there is  a more diverse line up but that line ups usually overshadowed by fps's that are  nearly the same thing(but in the end aren’t all video games just a slight variation from another videogame) but i disagree with the articles premise or what i felt the articles premise was. I felt that the article was saying: better graphics+better games=more variety
But then again you right about not being able to debate taste.....so you may be on to something. I was simply looking for a nice debate about the industry but looking back on my first post i do sound like one of thos /v/ fellows....

I would like to debate all of this graphics makes better games and FPS zergling rushes are awful but really to me games are just entertainment. If an FPS looks fun I will probably give it a shot! Obviously I don't have the computer to run, say, ARMA 2, but no hard feelings toward it, or even the more mindless shooters like... I think it was called "Painkiller".

I don't regularly play FPS games, I normally play RPGs, but mostly I am interested in having a good time. I won't support a company if their practices negatively affect me (like with awful DRM) so I won't buy their games, but other than that really I think sometimes we take games too seriously.

This statment is made even worse if you know that its not shiny realistic graphics that make the game. Its more the asthetics. You can have have the best graphics in the world and the game can still look like shit. Or last least polished shit. I mean that A game can have horrible graphics but still look great if you put those limited graphics to good use.

And I am disspointed that the market seems dominiated by FPSes. I really want new kinds of games, but it seems that the majority wants FPSes, so we will get plenty of FPSes.

Gah, JRPGS. I think having one or two in my gaming cabinet is enough.
I have been playing White Knight Chronicles for 6 or so hours collectively and I am no where near even the QUATER mark.

I don't know if taking it too seriously is the problem, I think it's the strict genre/style wars. "PRETTY FPS GAMES ARE HORRID, GIMME ASCII ROGUELIKES!", it's quite similar to "ROCK SUCKS, TRANCE ROCKS!". I don't solely watch SF movies, would be horrid. Hollywood usually flushes the market with the fotm-style movies too. You could make a good point how the truckload of 3D movies "makes it the best time to be a cinemavisitor".

Regardless, I think right now is a great time in the games industry for indie developers. With Minecraft's success, indie developers have been more motivated than ever to create quality games. Obviously indie games have been around for as long as I can remember, but I've seen some really amazing ones in the last few years, and a lot of heartwarming success stories. So I guess there's that.

I do not think fpses as a genre are bad but devs should try to come up with more original plots. I am just tired of all of the  virtually identical shooters, if devs gave various fps's different themes plots and styles or more varied themes plots and styles i wouldn’t be complaining
I rarely play fps but I am not the kind of indevidual who wouldn't play a game because of its genre.
