Alerting the doctors
« on: June 06, 2011, 10:04:06 am »

How do I make an alert that calls all designated doctors to the hospital burrow? The alert system seems designed for things like this, but I still havent figured out how to give an alert only to spesific dwarves instead of whole population.

You can assign a dwarf to a burrow, but not on-demand.  They will instead always remain in that burrow.  An alert status with a burrow will cancel all existing burrow priorities - if you have your doctor individually burrowed to the hospital, and then you activate an alert that has a whole-fort burrow, your doctor will leave the hospital because his "new" burrow is bigger.

My advice would be to build a bedroom and small food pile adjacent to the hospital and burrow him there, or don't.  He'll prefer his bedroom and the closest food, so it should keep him nearby anyways.  This ultimately doesn't matter, as hospital jobs appear to be nearly lowest priority and your doctors will sit around grooming their toenails before deciding to suture Urist McBloodSpewingTheFountain's missing leg.

You could put the doctors in an inactive squad, station the squad in the hospital, then lock the door. That would be fairly awkward though, and the stockpiles wouldn't get filled by the other dwarves. Isn't it simpler to just remove all other labours from the doctors so they have nothing else to do?

Yeah thats my tactic.  nothing at all enabled on doctors except their doctoring skill.  Be sure you remove recover wounded too.  If you use jobless doctors to keep them available then they become the definition of popular with other dwarves...I started a few spirals losing doctors who ran to retrieve a wounded soldier or took part in a seige cleanup and spawned an ambush.  Doctors with no other jobs must never go outside!

Critical negligence is a higher priority job than diagnosis.

A dwarf's willingness to do medical labors, and how rapidly they get to them, seems to be determined by their Altruism stat, and maybe also by their Sympathy stat. The other stats that determine how rapidly dwarves get to jobs - Diligence and Procrastination - also affect medical labors, so since medical labors tend to be time-sensitive you want dwarves who like helping others, feel others' pain, aren't given to procrastination, and work all the way through before abandoning a job as your doctors. The personality traits actually do matter; a dwarf with no altruism or sympathy might spend a month doing nothing before going to help the injured, while someone who loves helping others will start within days.

It's human (and dwarven) nature.

My set up has a "residency" on the "far side" of the Hospital where the Diagnostician and better Doctors (and a Nurse or two) live, eat, and have a small tasteful meeting area asigned to them.  When I have enough Dwarves that I can afford them doing nothing but medicine all the time, I turn off everything except Item Hauling and medical duties.

I give myself bonus points if my Chief Diagnostician steals food from his best friend.
