Can anyone unpause this save?
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:32:10 am »

http://www.wupload.com/file/10236661/Magma_Ocean!.rar

I embarked on an evil ocean, only to find out that about half the map is exposed lava. I decided to keep the save because it's unique, but I'm curious whether anyone can get this save to actually run. Whenever I unpause it locks up the game for hours and eventually uses up all my CPU trying to figure out all the steam and stuff from the lava colliding with ocean. It's totally unmodded by the way, just randomly genned like that with normal world gen paramaters.

tl;dr this is a pretty neat save IMO, curious if anyone can get it to run.

It lags somewhat, but doesn't crash for me. Getting about 10 FPS.
Also, everybody died. The wagon was surrounded by magma.

Well, you have a bit of time before magma completely covers the area they spawned in, so there's a chance you could survive. Actually, a simple channel around the wagon should do the trick, as magma isn't pressurized.

Nope, magma is still too close. Channeling down and to the side could save a couple dwarves, though.

no need for the plane then...
QUICK! URIST! DIG A REDIRCTIONING DITCH TO MAKE THE MAGMA FLOW TO THE SIDE!
what?
DIG A DIT- *burns*
Yeah, that was pretty much what happened. I still think digging down and to the side could work, though. Then you'd probably end up with two miners, no food, booze, seeds, forced to live down in the caverns. Fun times.

Wow. Surface cotton candy too.

FTFY to make sure newbies have no idea what you're on about. I'd advise you change it to keep it as a secret.
Good idea, I was just surprised. Does magma on the surface increase the occurance of surface candy floss, or is this just purely a world generation fuck up?

It's a worldgen fuckup, but the two are related.  What happens is that the game confuses the layers, and somehow removes the entire surface and pushes the magma sea upwards to take its place.  So what you're looking at is, really, the magma sea itself.  These somewhat-common worldgen lulz are strange because the same seed won't produce the same errors, it seems to be some deeper-coded fluke that occurs independent of actual worldgen somehow.

That sounds like how a lot of my forts start out anyways.

Burning and raping the land is recreational. Where business is concerned, though, sustainability is the name of the game.

I'm going to have a go at this. It sounds like fun!

This is the worst-planned embark I have ever seen...

Who decides to park a caravan between a flaming wall of death and an ocean?

Oh wait... no ocean. Just magma. And broken cave formations in the sky.

Someone who has considered the alternatives.

I'm trying, but my poor (normally 450fps) computer can't seem to take it. Kotekzot, how long did your computer take to unpause?

It unpaused immediately, but was pretty slow throughout.

I have it! It runs when I disable cave-ins. I don't know why, I just assume some of the cavern pieces are unstable or something.

Anyway, now to see if I can get underground before the lava gets me.

Holy mother of Armok! I just loaded the map (download troubles etc). And it is the weirdest embark i've ever seen. That's definitely the Magma Sea floating about above the surface! And TWO FOUR cotton candy canes at ground level. EDIT: And I just noticed all the Semi-Molten Rock everywhere. What a glitch.

Well we know what happens to elves who try and visit this fortress.

And, damn, is that lava close! And high up! Lava rain, or more like a wall of lava coming for you. Why the dwarves chose to park right there is a mystery.

EDIT: Looks like a lot of SMR levels in this map. Sand, but not much stone or minerals to be had.

And there's cavern water UNDERNEATH THE SLADE LEVEL!

EDIT: After two dead expeditions, the third expedition has spawned on safe ground inexplicably 40 levels above ground, with tower cap trees growing nearby, and regular grass. I found the "caverns", i think. There's lots of squiggly trails up here joining islands of solid ground, very odd. Almost all the ground is now a lava sea, except a little bit of ocean protected by obsidian.

A little of the "ground" up in the air joins the map edge, wondering whether immigrants etc will span there, continuing with silly lava map for !!!science!!!

EDIT: THe top z-level is at z=2060, lots of vertical space to build.
