High Expectations For Vampires
« on: June 06, 2011, 02:24:50 am »

Dear Vampire Tanner Urist,

I have painstakingly chained 10 useless migrants in your room for you to turn into vampires.  It wasn't easy, and I'm not sure it could have been done without modding, so why in Armok's name are you still trying to feed on my legendary armorsmith, you know I gave him an adamantine scarf just to stop your shenanigans.  If you do not churn out at least 3 more vampires in the next year, I will recruit Vampire Hunter Urist into the Marksdwarf squad.  Furthermore, I will put a skylight in your room, since every time I have tried to drop you into magma you have turned into a bat at the last second.

Yours,
The Overseer

What are the rest of you expecting to do with your first vampire?  Do you think vampires will migrate to your fort?  Will you live in constant fear of vampire immigration and atomsmash all migrants?  Or will you learn to stop worrying and love the vamplosion?

What else would one do in Dwarf Fortress?

Make a death trap out of it.

i think it would be at least an excuse for that Captain of the Guard to have his "Decent office" and his silver axe.

A vampire fortress sounds interesting.  I wonder if vampires will be able to survive by drinking each others blood, like a vampiric perpetual motion machine.

Or maybe thats why traders bring all those chipmunk blood barrels!

My first vampire is going to be the tax collector.

If you somehow turn your entire fortress into vampires, how would they react to caravans? Would whole-fortress vampirization effectively be some kind of loyalty cascade? If the vampires turned every caravan member into more vampires, would they become friendly again after they'd turned, and amicably leave the map? (In release 5+, will that also mean the Mountainhomes would turn into vampire citadels?) Would there be enough blood to go around? Do vampires starve without fresh blood meals? ... could blood meals be preserved to ensure the fortress doesn't die between migrant/caravan/siege infusions?!

For what we know, Vampires might only becomes vampires after getting cursed. They might not have the ability to turn people, only to kill them.

Ingestibles. I can't remember where it was, but Toady mentioned vampirism was spread via ingestibles (namely their blood).

That's just for now, or i believe that's what toady meant when he said "for the next few days". I believe that released vampires will be able to pass on their curse.

Somehow a lightless pit full of ravenous vampires sounds more awesome than other types of inevitable deathtraps. Plus it'd cut back on needing to murder any of our own who fell victim to attacks- just stuff em in the Justice Pit and let them continue disposing of invaders.

With regards to passing on the curse, Toady was talking about randomizing a lot of other aspects; it's possible the method of transference will also be randomized. It's definitely going to be spreadable in some fashion, but the only way mentioned was drinking vampire blood, which might not really be possible in dwarf mode.

Vampires aren't on good terms with the blood god.
