No clay or sand on your embark? Clay is great for quick defensive walls. And you can get your wood back by replacing wood buildings with clay.

be sure to hunt with bone bolts, wooden ones are totally crappy. If you have some small animals, up to warthog's size, just kill them with 2-3 soldiers, that's much faster than unexperienced huting. Don't try with anything bigger though.
Once the hunting industry is operational, you can buy the entire caravan with roasts.

Are you planning on trading for picks or is this an above ground survivalist project?

I have done embarks like this before and as long as you have 2 trees on the embark you can do it.  (or a water source and 0 trees.)  However, this assumes you want to trade in the fall.  You can find some way to kill the merchants rather than trade with them...

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

If you have trees to use, just make spiked balls for trade. They have insane value, so it's a good profit. And make them from wood, they weight next to nothing.

Okay, I will replace my wood bolts with bone ones, but only after the 200 something wood bolts I have made are already used up XD

We have enough food for a while. 9 dwarves so far, and around 20-30 something meat still left from butchering the water buffalo, as well as a decent amount of "other" food types. I'm also getting plants still, and my hunter is already up to adequate I think, even after only hunting for a few minutes in real life. He already killed a yak with his wooden bolts, which just needs to be butchered.

Eventually I'm going to make some animal traps. Hopefully the caravan will have some picks that I can buy for cheap, and start mining my own stone.

This was originally just a blank slate embark - no items, skills, etc. - but I think it has become an above ground survival project! I'll have a mine, but not very much stuff actually underground.

the trade caravan just showed up!

I bought some copper bars by accident, and I am moving more things to the depot now. mostly food items, since I have TONS of it right now. I hope to buy a pick already made, since they don't have an anvil to make one. I'll need to stick to bone bolts for now until I can get an anvil, or one of my dwarves gets a mood and makes one out of bone or something.

EDIT: YES! Just got a bismuth bronze pick! Time to set one of my people as a miner and start digging up all this exposed metal and coal.

EDIT time duece!: I found anvils in their caravan! YES!!! Time to buy it!

Well, I've proven to myself that I can survive embarking with nothing.

Time to abandon and play on my actual game :D

I wanted the challenge of it. First thing I am going to do is deconstruct the wagon and gather plants.
How can you gather plants without skills?  I mean, sure, you could turn on plant gathering.  But then you could also turn on masonry, carpentry, and strand extracting.

You don't need to already have some skill in something to do it.

Wait...

You found coal on embark, and you want to abandon?  ??? Do you have flux and iron?

You don't need to already have some skill in something to do it.
Of course.  But I thought the challenge was to not do so.

The challenge isn't to not use labours, it's to not spend any points on initial skills or equipment. Once the game is running, you can use every means at your disposal. That's the challenge. If you didn't do any task which required a skill, all dwarves would die of starvation. That would just be silly.
