My Volcano is emptying... on embark.
« on: June 05, 2011, 09:08:19 pm »

Sooo, uh. I chose an embark location with a volcano. And the first thing that happens is my fps goes all to hell, and then slowly starts rising. I was confused for a minute or two as to what happened, until I noticed my volcano was EMPTYING. Like, the bottom was cut out or something, draining the whole thing out from the bottom. I cant see where.

I'm curious what on earth could have caused this - I though volcanoes were solid all the way down to the bottom layer. Im strongly considering going ahead with this map and building INSIDE the shell of the volcano for kicks. Or will it randomly fill back up or something once its drained out?

Sounds like it's draining into the caverns or underworld or some other freaky.  I'd abandon and try a different location.

use reveal to find the problem, might just be a cavern. unless its draining into the clowns training camp.

Unfortunately, looks like I may have to. The framerate is going up and down alot now, and I've barely started on building the first floor.

Wow, more oddities. I had no idea grass could actually grow underground, and yet theres a huge underground forest here. With towercaps and stuff instead of trees.

....and yep. The volcano was draining out into Clowntopia. I dug down a ways to see where. I guess I'll be starting a new embark, lol.

Oh my aren't you refreshingly young to the game!  Do re-embark, and cherish your boyish naivety until the cruel weight of your beard draws you down into a hunched, hardened individual.

This is actually perfectly ordinary anymore. With the release of version 31.19, some animals now need to graze on grasses in order to survive, and, in order to allow players who want to abandon the surface to do so, Toady made it so that there are various fungi that function as grass in the caverns. Tower-caps and various other giant mushrooms have also been present since 31.01, providing wood.

Of course, if you have actual grass and trees underground, that's somewhat unusual, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Dig like a hyperactive mole, and set up a reservoir for the magma, before it drains out. Use it later for forges.
By reservoir, I mean a section of tunnels below where your foundry will be. If you embarked with some magma safe materials, make a magma safe flood gate, and mechanisms. Before you breach the volcano wall, install the floodgate, operated via a lever. When the tunnels fill to 6/7 level, close the floodgate. Magma operates furnaces, forges from the heat. Never actually uses magma, like water does from a cistern. When the magma level drops below the floodgates level, build a constructed wall to prevent building destroyers from destroying the floodgate.
For the sake of greed, if you have a permanent water source, drain it into the volcano now, for a obsidian source, and as a future plug.
End result is a magma foundry, obsidian to mine, and once volcanoes top is roofed, a nice cylindrically excavated area.

No, because the clowns can come through magma freely. They're all immune to the temperature of magma, they don't breath, they can swim, and they can fly. In short, magma draining into the depths makes it so that the circus will arrive even without you seeking any cotton candy. Given the additional lag that constantly-flowing liquids and constant temperature recalculations as a result of moving magma causes, sites with such problems aren't much good at all.

You're mistaken. Spoilered are raws for a clown from my last world ripped with DFWorldTinker; you'll notice that it has the FLIER tag, but not wings in its description or its body parts list. All clowns can fly.

I see. Guess I must've misinterpreted some observations. Thanks.

If it had freed the clowns, he would have found out by now. Possibly its draining into a section, where the clowns cannot travel
