Can you select an area to dump all items from?
« on: June 05, 2011, 05:11:43 pm »

I'm wondering if theres a way to select wide swathes of stone lying around and mark it all for dumping at once. A way that DOESNT involve using the z-stocks to dump all of a kind of stone. I just want to clear out a few large rooms, not the entire fort. Is there a quick way to do that without manually flagging each stone for dumping?

You could also just hide all the rock using the similar d-b-h, its not like it actually does anything.

It does prevent use of stockpiles, if you ever build a stockpile over hidden stone...

You sure? I've seen my haulers stashing stuff under the boulders.

Some stuff can get stashed under boulders, others can't. Rocks take up a full stockpile square each, so only things that don't take up a full stockpile square, like crafts and the like, can be stored in the same square as them. Bins and barrels can't, however, nor can most larger items.

Bins and barrels are stored under rocks, everything else isn't.

edit; Forgot to mention, bins and barrels that are in the furniture stockpile cannot stack with boulders on the same stockpile. Only barrels and bins used to store items can share a space with rocks.

What I usually do is carve a tiny 1x1 tile out in the corner of the room, kinda like a closet, designate it as a dump, then just d-b-d all the stones I want. Afterwards, just d-b to reclaim the pile and you have an infinite storage area in just 1 square. I assume a lot of people do this too but I'm not sure.

I usually put my stone dump by the mason's workshop. He's sitting there churning out blocks, so he'll be good forever. I used to have stone stockpiles, but that only works for so long.

That's called quantum stockpiling.

Is it a bug?

Not really, some might call it an exploit, though. Ultimately it doesn't matter in an SP game.

Quantum stockpiling is widely considered the only option for dealing with stone.  Without using a quantum stockpile, then underground forts become impossible to manage due to the enormous waste stone.

To be fair there's atom smashing and magma vents. Those take up a bit more effort and forethought but can be much cleaner if you really don't want that big pile of orthoclase in the corner.
