How many forgotten beasts lie dead in your stockpiles?
« on: June 05, 2011, 04:24:15 pm »

I'm curious, because I've seemingly been very lucky with my fortress so far. 8 years in, I've had 8 forgotten beasts, and the only one that has really given me much trouble (well I class much trouble as more than ten deaths) was one made entirely of platinum that shot poison ice bolts.

I've regened the world elsewhere and looked up some of the beasts, and there are plenty of deadly sounding ones around... Like one composed of flame... But I haven't had anything that causes flesh rot, or anything bad like that appear. I had a Dragonfly with poison blood and ichor, but it got one shot killed, so I just marked it as forbidden and no one has suffered.

Is this usual? To get this many beasts and survive? Or have I just had the luck of Armok?

Edit: Picture included. Its now nine beasts in nine years

Getting that many forgotten beasts is pretty uncommon. I've never had more than two come to a fortress.
Your military must be amazing. Taking down a platinum quadruped with deadly spittle? I've never approached such a thing.

This is mighty impressive, at least from my viewpoint. I salute you, for this dwarven feat.
Armok must be on your side.

And that's the strange thing... My military is woefully undertrained. I never train them. The whole fortress is constantly working, I have no idle dwarves and no parties, I can't afford time to train them. So my fortress guards are all untrained crossbow dwarves, and the other squads are melee fighters who come from the migrant stock pre trained. They're averagely equiped, since I have no Iron on this map, with copper and siver weapons, and whatever the goblins were wearing. I'm just in the process of a mass melting re arrange the military (copper hammers and silver axes melted and re forged the other way round)

Edit:- Ten... The age of the world is only 490 and according to the handy artifacts I have to hand Craftslance was founded in 481, fell in 482, reclaimed in 483, so technically its 10 of these beasts in 7 years. Forgot I was on reclaim, that might have something to do with it, but I only reclaimed with 7 dwarves. Also the world age might mean just more of these things are around.

Checking my most recent fort...year 266, embarked 251.

pop 114, wealth: 6,157,479 (yeah yeah, no gold or local steel, difficult bluemetal)

7 dead FB's
1 dead swamp titan
10 living FB's (possibly more, haven't explored all the caverns)

2 dead dragons
1 dead hydra
1 dead giantess
1 dead cyclops
2 dead ettins
1 Dolomite bison demon, decapitated by a punch to the head, showed up with a goblin siege.

430+ dead goblins, 2 dozen dead trolls, several pages of dead kittens, zombie badgers, zombie horses, vultures, cave crawlers, creeping eyes...
27 dead dwarves.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

When did your titan show up? It seems embarking in age of legends or myth makes for most 'fun'

I've not had ANY other creatures come. My population is at 99, all my caverns are open to the public and I'm constructing a piston/submarine thing to be able to get at the bluemetal submerged in the magma sea... hopefully it will work.

All though my death screen is littered with cavern critters, more crundles than sense, olms, trolls, cave ogres. Most of these cave critters get names for grabbing some poor web collector or herbalist, so all my military (well, milita) have these elaborate kill lists like 'Killed Houndscraft the Blind Cave Ogre, Killed Swordsbane the Crundle'

27 DEAD DWARFS!?!? What am I doing wrong... I lost count at 230 dead dwarves. 60 or so of those are from before the reclaim though. My vast catacombes expand each year to meet the demand, and I had to expand my mining operation just to get stone to make coffins...

None in my current fort, I just started. In my old fort I had two FB's, three titans composed of stone and one of salt and then nothing else.

The titan would have been really early, somewhere near year 4. My pop cap would have been 80.

Dead dwarves uhm.... well in year 2 I walled in 75% of the map, the only gate in was a trap corridor with bronze discs. All caverns are walled up ASAP. When I needed to breach the cavern for farming space I did it with cave-in plugs to drain part of a lake. Lost a miner to a cave-in because I was careless. Then I walled up all of it. Lost 3 or 4 to FB's that wandered in through buggy underwater fortifications (well cistern intake) and one climbed up my magma vent... somehow... (was on Cavern 3, there was no linking passage to the magma sea that I saw). One potash maker swan-dived into the trash compactor. Couple failed moods. Most of the rest were soldiers that either died to the dolomite bison or archers that got sniped through fortifications. One doctor died of thirst as he rolled around the apartment hallway with sleepy dust poisoning. Two guys also dodged onto the surrounding wall of the fort and died of thirst.

Oh and one complete moron who ran over my entire trap hallway past 2 groups of trolls and a goblin squad out into the open.

I guess in short I'm paranoid about defenses and cave-ins.

Dead dwarves uhm.... well in year 2 I walled in 75% of the map, the only gate in was a trap corridor with bronze discs.

I'm in year 10 and have about 200 dwarfs living inside my fortress. Only 40-50 dwarfs has been killed during those years. They died to goblin ambush because they were foolish enough to run right into them before the military were able to get there. I am currently walling off the entire map so there is only one small corridor into my fortress where my archers can stand up on the wall and rain bolts down on them.

I have had 3 forgotten beasts. My military is 2 squads, one archer squad and one melee squad. They both have full steel armor with steel weapon and steel bolts. About 4-5 are attached to their weapon. There were only one forgotten beast which i had problems with, he killed 6 soldiers easily before i he went down. The other forgotten beast managed to sneak inside my fortress from the caverns somehow and killed some of my workers. But it was not a huge loss, i manage to get my military down there before he could do to much. Cant remember how many he killed tho. The last one went down with only one soldier hitting him.

I haven't ventured into the caves yet.

IMO you're the one doing it right, its much more entertaining (atleast for me) to lose half your army every battle than to have 1 superdwarf who 1 shots everything. In my fort I've lost about 20 dwarves, 3 years in, 2 fbs and 1 seige.

A couple? I atomshmash my unbutcherable corpse stockpile occupants every now and then. If you were to ask how many *forgotten beast tallow biscuits* i have, well...
All in all I think i've had about 30 forgotten beasts come to my fortress in 15 years. 3 separate caverns.

I atom smash every non-butcherable corpse... except for important enemies.  Ten dead Goblin Macemen?  They're going down the pit.  That dead Goblin Axelord?  He's going on display.

11 forgotten beasts, 1 horny bull man combo thingy. My fort is around 8 years old, around 120 beardy drunks. All killed by my military with no fancy trickery, my military are pretty weak, mostly in goblinite. Been pretty luck I guess. I have 2 caverns full open, the only part walled up is my main entrance, with a walkway of death leading to my fort.

FBs vary wildly.  Some are made of stupid materials and children can punch them in half.  A lot of the special abilities are pretty lame.

Stings and bites are only relevant if you let it swing.  1 on 1 with a dwarf it may mess him up but dump 2 squads on it and you probably get away with 1 sting tops.

Fire breathers (and other dragon-style breathers) can be counteracted by shields and skill with them.

FBs become a problem usually in one of two situations.
First like you described they come in a good material like platinum which makes them hard as hell.
Second they have deadly blood or deadly dust/gas which brings on the awesome rot/plague/spiral/doom you read about.

The other risk is flying FBs if you are open to the caverns above floor level or the very rare vermin FB which can only be killed by cats

Ive had 6 beasts in 9 years and 3 deadly blood, 2 deadly dust.  The point is that the buggers are created by RNG and then the one you get is also RNG.  You win some, you lose some.

Re titans, ive only had SMBs after 9 years.  2 Giants, a cyclops and a Minotaur.  You just gotta wait till one passes by :)

Look at the Sixth one down.

Create a temple for him with his corpse on the throne, and have random glitchy things for him to fix in his altar.
