Games with DF stlye damage.
« on: June 05, 2011, 02:14:50 pm »

For me the most annoying abstraction made with games is HP, its just a weird system.
I am looking for more games that avoid the concept of damage being only against the whole.

Component damage is cool too.

To start I like the way Torabash has ripping limbs off.

There is always Ivan, although there is a HP system, each body part has it's own hitpoint score.

Roboforge is pretty fun in this regard. Captain Forever and Battleships Forever are fun too.

Robinson's Requiem
Deus
Unreal World
SWAT 4

And to a lesser extent,
Terra Nova (subsystems and directional shields next to overall health)
Deus Ex (limb system next to overall health)

Fix'd, it's "i" not "a".

Also, you should check out Die By the Sword. Yep, back in 1998 they had games with physics applied to their animations (it's somewhat clunky, but i'm amazed how few games today have something even as simple as your legs moving further up or down if you're walking on a ramp, plus the awesomeness of controlling your weapon arm with your mouse. It's like a friggin Wii on your computer :D). Chop off their arms and they can't fight, chop off their legs and they slow down or something, decapitation is obvious :P. Download the Demo to try it out, the one i got doesn't have campaign, just arena fights and an AI demonstration, but it's still enough to at least get a handle on the somewhat complicated controls. Obviously if you get it make sure you set the compatibility stuff to Windows 95 etc. since it probably won't work for you otherwise (at least not for Vista).

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

-snip-

The game is very clunky. Almost impossible. The arcade mode is very difficult to play with and the mouse mode isn't very stable. Also it is possible to run it on Vista.(as for your ramp thing I would suggest that you google 'Overgrowth' and see a few trailers)

Anyways, I have nothing to contribute to this thread but I am very interested in finding a game like this.
If you are just looking for decaps then I would suggest 'Severance'. It is a beat em up Rpg game. The combat requires you to block, dodge and do what not to avoid damage. It isn't exceptionally hard but it can be fun. Also, if you attack once part of enemy as a final strike it would get cut off(headstrikes are one hit kill though)

Speaking of Overgrowth, theres Lugaru HD if you want to try some of the stuff they have in a full game instead of the preorder alpha stuff, though it'll look worse.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

I know you can run it on Vista, i was just saying you need to put it in Windows 95 compatibility. And i know it's clunky as hell, but if you want proof that it is possible to play it well, i point you in the direction of this. Plus, it's pretty cool playing it in first-person mode, if harder :P.

All fallout games actually. Although I'm not sure if you are able to aim at body parts in BoS

Yes you can, although you won't really use it in real time mode.
