In my experience, they arrive (aboveground) at any edge square that can path to the depot, if one such square exists.  If they understand that you can LEAVE via the caverns, I would be very surprised if they wouldn't also enter - you'd just have to be very sure that they have an unobstructed path in or they'll spawn at their default location on the upper world map.  Also, if you're being sieged on the surface, they still won't show up, will they?

Try walling your whole map off with dfliquids. Open the caverns, if not already made. See what happens.

Isn't walling the map off also possible using raising bridges? I think that is how Sphalerite did it, when beginning to breed sea serpents.

Bridges, dfliquids, statues, ice, channels...the opportunities for "No Wall" abuse are endless.
