You can't have leather armor and a breastplate. They both have the [SHAPED] tag. Leather armor in the olden dayes o yore was boiled and shaped, which makes it rigid and tough. Its not like a leather jacket you buy at the "Discount Country Biker Barn, inc", down the street or whatever, so breastplates don't fit.

I go with leather armor and chainmail shirts.

Spears work, but they get stuck. Might try mining picks instead if you can get them in the uniform. They get stuck too, but not as badly and they are very lethal. If you pick a "sticky" weapon like spears, picks, swords, give them heavy shields like iron. They'll shield-bash if their weapon gets stuck.

I thought that copper was heavier than iron.

Eh, no. Silver is heavier and silver is only useful for bludgeon type weapons like maces, hammers and shields.

Copper is good for studding objects. If you have no other metals on you're fort, make copper warhammers/maces... maybe spears. Such is conventional wisdom.

Couple of questions asked that have been missed.

I dont think dwarf skill relates to where the attack will land, the RNG decides location (fairly sure its what would be the easiest hit if you were adventurer).  Dwarf skill then comes in for the hit vs dodge/block stuff.  If you see combat reports where a creature is taking all shots to the head then it is unconcious or otherwise trapped (web, pain, sleep etc), KO'd enemies are always simple strike to any location and everyone auto-hits head.  The guy asking this mentioned his iron axe bouncing off iron helm, this is a demonstration of why anything iron or below is kinda lame for edged weapons, a slash wont penetrate equal metal.

Layering clothing/leather under metal does provide added protection...albeit meagre.  This can be seen if you set a dwarf up with metal plate and clothing underneath and hit him with a blunt weapon.  The combat report reads 'bruised whatever through the *clothing here*' since the blunt weapon ignores the metal. (it actually hits the metal and the armor then hits the dwarf with a blunt attack, leather/clothing give when struck unlike metal, which is why they provide protection to blunt where plate doesnt.)

Someone else mentioned dwarves with odd remnants of clothing on along with armor, this is fairly common if you dont set the uniform to replace civilian clothes and can also cause some conflicts (I cant wear a breastplate, im wearing a rat fur vest!)

I see my military as a bunch of disposable punching bags. Every draftee gets a globinite helm, breastplate/mail shirt, iron or bronze weapon and wooden shield. If they prove themselves worthy in combat then they earn a full suit of armor.

Can weapons 'ignore' armor, though? I've had this gobbo lasher make a brain squishy out of a candy-clad dwarf. According to the combat report, his helm reflected the goblin's attacks a good six or seven times, at to one point it ignored it altogether and went for his silk cap, offing the poor dwarf in one hit. And no, the dwarf wasn't unconscious, I think.

They're both good for bolts too.
