One thing inherently better about fiction than reality is you can decide what fiction you want to accept or not.

Dislike that one movie, but liked the others? That one movie never happened.
Hate that one episode? What episode?
Think the latest book out in that series you like was trash? Throw it in the trash.

It's quite liberating.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I assure you that we can do (and do do!) the same with history.

We are supposed to be moving towards a service society, in a society that never wants to pay for service.

So, AIDS? http://communications.uwo.ca/media/hivvaccine/

I couldn't find the medical miracle thread we had a couple months ago, figured it might have a place here though.

With any luck AIDS will have gone the way of Polio in our lifetime.

"First and only"?  I beg to differ: http://www.gizmag.com/spanish-hiv-vaccine-90-percent-immune-response/19973/

Plus there's Sangamo's AIDS gene therapy, too.

Regardless, it's a vaccine, not a cure. While that's still good and will help to stifle the HIV spread in areas where it is prevalent, a cure would be much better as we could go about eradicating it without having to wait for all the infected to die.

A vaccine is a VERY good thing. Don't play it down. It's not realistic to embark into erradication programmes without one. Cures or no cures.

Sangamo's trick is closer to a cure for infectees, although it's not quite there, either. (But something on those lines can work. In fact, the project was inspired by the only case that I know of someone being cured of AIDS.)

We recently found one by accident. Unfortunately, the discovery involved a procedure that tends to kill 25% of the patients that undergo it, so it needs some optimization...

Uh..

wtf ((<_>))

Care to elaborate? I think this is a pretty interesting story. I like when people are willing to do what's necessary to solve a problem, especially one that doesn't even affect them, even when what he does seems crazy to those around him despite being completely ethical.
