"It's a tradition that's been going on for years."
"I would argue about it and say to not say it," Batts said in a home video submitted to the Buffalo News, "and they would tell me they're not racist, it's just a word. There was nothing I could do much before the game because I was outnumbered."
After confronting one of her teammates, she says she was verbally attacked with another racial slur. After that, the confrontation got physical and Batts was suspended for five days for initiating a fight. "It was a buildup of anger and frustration at being singled out of the whole team," she said.
Why yes a fight broke out, whoever could've seen that coming...? Yes, it is entirely and absolutely the school's fault, all of it,. period. Everyone knew this was a tradition at the school and no one did a damn thing, because they didn't think it was wrong. The school knows what it did was unquestioningly illegal, which is why they tried to silence her with a greater punishment than the others. Once someone with a brain heard of this, they changed the "tradition" immediately. I imagine their lawyer heard this once, spit out his coffee and looked at the school official in disbelief.
I hope she sues; I really do. It's the only thing these assholes understand: money being taken out of their pockets.
She brought it up repeatedly that she'd like them to stop using the N-word. No one did anything. It took a fight to actually get anything done. Why?
The NAACP needs to get involved and invite themselves to some funding events in protest to stare these bastards down and show them exactly how it's "just a word."
