I was sorely tempted to do the same.

I don't know where fundamentalists get this idea that they're not allowed to celebrate Christmas or pray in school... seriously, what gives them this idea?  I might as well claim I'm a victim of Rick Perry oppression because he stole my wallet yesterday.  It never happened, but it's just as believable as the bullshit about prayer in schools.

As a child, after my family moved away from an area with a fundamentalist christian school and we were "forced" to attend public school, my family and church told me at least once a week that we were being oppressed and victimized because I wasn't allowed to pray in school. I was also trained on how to answer any question on biology, geology and anthropology.

I'm assuming that's either to do with dinosaurs and fossils or something to do with carbon dating... I have been wrong before though so this may be one of those "Shellfish are the devil's food" kind of things.

Don't schools make special accommodations to ALLOW prayer? I know Muslims can ask for breaks for their daily prayers.

It's just that teachers can't lead a class in it. A student would have to. (same goes for pre-game prayers for sports teams, iirc)

And I've never heard of a school where Christmas celebrations weren't a regular thing.  When I was in grade school, students were forced to participate in very heavily religious christmas productions that many hours of class time were dumped into rehearsing, unless they had a very good excuse.  I got out of it by claiming it was against my religion as a Jehovah's Witness, and continued for many years after my mom had stopped practicing and I felt no relation to it anymore.  I sat alone in the bleachers for hours watching everyone else on stage sing songs about Jesus.

Just since "political correctness gone mad" is probably the favourite genre of "made-up or ridiculously overblown from one case" tabloid articles.  Especially if "here" is Britain, since this is a classic example of a wholly fabricated story that got repeated enough for everyone to believe it (maybe it's true in some other country though).
