The suprise is not who is the Belgian PM, but that you guys got around to actually getting one. Good Job. Now all we need in the UK is someone other than the spawn of Thatcher and we will be much better off.

italians have hardcoded in their genes one thing only: politics.
don't worry, we suck at it, but we manage to get far high on the politics scale.

According to all the pseudo-racist commercials we get from Italian food companies, you'd think it was tomatoes.

yeah, that's why we get far: you don't expect us to be good at politics-grinding. But we are, and reach high. we just suck hard on politics in general. But grinding to the top? we do manage.

Also on the topic on homosexuality in the Bible, the New Testament has some passages that could be interpreted as condemning homosexuality, but I've heard some interesting counter-arguments with the current interpretations being inconsistent with the biblical style of writing.

But really, even if we disprove that the Bible condemns homosexuality, many Christians are still going to condemn homosexuality just because it's wrong anyway. It's more like an irrational cultural thing and people use religion to justify it (just like many other things).

EDIT: That Obama healthcare thing is pretty awesome, but the health insurance companies will find a loophole anyway.

Guess he shouldn't have gone around asking every woman in sight if they'd like to try his extra-large sausage special.  :P

Reviving an old topic, drug control: a vaccine for cocaine

In the 38% of the patients who developed an immune response, antibodies latching onto the cocaine molecules completely inactivated them.  They didn't do anything.  No high, no side effects.

Now, one obvious response in someone who's jonesing for another hit but can't seem to make it work would be to keep taking the drug until it does.  What wasn't included in that online article, but was included in the hardcopy Discover magazine I got, was that urine tests for cocaine in the clinical trial showed that some had in fact tried that.  Some of the urine samples had levels as high as a 1,000,000 nanograms per milliliter; it should be noted that the doctor commented that she'd never seen anyone living with over 100,000 nanograms per milliliter.  In other words, they had given themselves ten times the lethal dose of cocaine, or even more, and still reported that they weren't feeling much of anything.

Now, only giving that useful response in 38% of the patients isn't so good, and it seems you need "booster shots" every two months or so, but it's still a work in progress . . . and still damn interesting.

Seems like a great way to make people travel further down the allegorical road of drugs. People who abuse drugs do so for a reason, and making them "immune" to one drug will only make them turn to a heavier drug unless said problems are dealt with at the same time.

Another fun fact I forgot, they tested the people in the study for methamphetamine use (since apparently that's a popular substitute for cocaine) and they came up clean.

Plus you could always, y'know, invent a vaccine for meth too.  Or heroin.  Or whatever.  In fact they're already working on it.  It's not like they don't cause enough harm on their own.

Ethanol might be trickier, it's just such a simple molecule . . . I'm not sure if it could be reliably identified by the immune system.  Of course, I'm not an immunologist . . .

Ever heard of the slippery slope fallicy? Besides that, not everyone who does drugs does it to make their life less crappy

The problem is that there will always be drugs you can't vaccinate against without causing future harm. There is a reason that pharmaceutical companies produce certain drugs that stimulate the pleasure centres of a brain as a side effect. For instance, no one is going to make a vaccine against morphine. Cocaine may not be used medicinally (as far as I know), but morphine is. I have a limited prescription for it for my kidney stones when they come on. For as long as pain management is required, there will be drugs that people will need access to for treatment.

If you mandate use of the vaccine for illegal drugs, you still leave the avenue open for prescription drugs -- which are actually the bigger percentage of drugs used illicitly in my general location, in fact. At least, that's what was on the news or something recently.
