Well yeah, we eat too much meat in general. But I'm bothered by how many people say it's all good if you just switch out pork with chicken and keep eating the same amount of meat.

Pork gets an undue bad rap. Especially since they've done a pretty good job breeding the fat out of hogs in the last 50 years. Your average pork chop or ham today is far leaner than in years gone by.

My family and I probably eat more pork than any other kind of meat, and we don't have sodium or cholesterol problems. Another nice thing is that pork is rarely laced with antibiotics or growth hormone because pigs have hardier immune systems than cattle or chickens, and they grow to market weight quickly. Along with goats, pigs are an ideal livestock for marginal farmlands because they can eat almost anything. And finally, they just taste so damn good and you can eat virtually every part of a pig in some fashion.
Nice try, North Carolinian.

I'd say it's probably a little better, but you're right. If anything, I'd say people should eat more fish... then again, considering mercury toxicity and overfishing, you have to be careful of that too.

Then the logic from there is to become a vegitari- Oh wait, protein shortage. The secret really just is to learn how to eat things in moderation and exercise appropriately. Hell, you could probably carve a somewhat healthy diet out of fast food alone if you knew what you were doing.

It might be slightly better (though I'm not convinced that decreasing meat diversity is a good thing), but most people paint it as if pork is arsenic compared to chicken.

The secret turns out to be not too eat too much, eat a balanced diet, avoid artificial or overly processed foods and more around quite a lot. No suprises there.

Actually, it's pretty easy to get the right amount of protein when you're a vegetarian. you just have to eat stuff like rice and beans.

I was hoping that was a translation error, and it was just a law to prevent Russians from being "happy". Because that's been an unofficial government policy for centuries.

Here's another story on it with a bit more detail:

Also....Russian Nazis? WTF? That's like a black Klansman.

And this is why no one listens when Russia complains about how its rated by freedom indices.

I mean, Russia isn't a particularly progressive nation, but this is a huge step backwards. Homosexuality, transexuality, and pedophilia??

I have a co-worker friend who has recently begun raving about the Keto Diet, which places a major emphasis on saturated fats.  Some of his explanation did make sense.  I've also noted for a long time that the healthiest cultures with the longest lifespans tend to use fish and rice as the staples of their diet.  The longest lived person officially recorded attributed her longevity to olive oil, which she rubbed on her skin daily and put on all her food.  She also ate about a pound of chocolate a week.  There was an accomplished body builder on another forum I frequented a couple years ago who recommended a super health diet of boiled chicken breasts and steamed vegetables.  Around that same time, the world's oldest person was here in Indiana, and her diet for most of her life consisted mainly of starchy foods.

My impression is that the body has a bunch of various needs, and there are many ways to provide those needs.  Different methods will work best for different people.  Perhaps the most important thing is to have some consistency.  Your body is a bunch of processes that like to settle into routines, and will learn to adapt and make the best use of whatever you're feeding into it if there is some regularity.

Beyond that, the whole dietary health issue is such a cluster fuck of conflicting information that I've kind of given up on it.  I only try not to eat too much of stuff I know is unhealthy.

Also, that potential law in St Petersburg sounds incredibly dystopian.  I wish I could watch the video right now.

I... I love nuclear power. Nuclear power is STILL the safest, cleanest and most reliable form of energy production known to man even including Fukushima and Chernobyl.
